Why did they burn the house exactly?

I got it that it was this big emotional moment but I have no idea why. It was mentioned several times that there are abandoned houses nearby. Why not move there? Why lose everything in the house you can't carry? Why not keep the generator and use the gas for something more useful?
The explanation given also made absolutely no sense to me. People will think they died in the fire? So what? If they're out in the woods, they couldn't care less what people think when they see the empty house.
And yes, humans have been living without electrified houses for almost all of their existence but they haven't been living without shelter and they had skills these girls didn't have. Why would they not at least try to survive a winter out in the wild before they almost literally burn all their bridges? These girls basically signed their own death sentence and the music is telling me this is some kind of uplifting climax to the movie? What the hell? -

With a baby no less. I could see them leaving that house, but going to live in a tree stump?
There are plenty of abandoned houses to go to.You did just fine, Clarence. Now go get yo'self some hot cornbread!

My exact thought. I guess Eva could come up with a stupid idea like that and think it makes sense. She doesn't exactly seem too bright and acts on emotions rather than logic. Nell on the other hand, seems resourceful, sensible and intelligent (most of the time). How she didn't ask her sister to put down the damn gas, take care of her kid, and leave the thinking to her, is beyond me.

Why did they burn down the house? Because it was a beep house. Any house that freaking falls apart in three months deserves to be burnt down!
And who uses so much glass when building in the woods??
Also black mold is really bad for your baby, but living in the rain in the open forest is super kewl and healthy for a new born baby. -

It's better than inhaling black mold all the time, I can asure you that, you can actually die because of this, black mold is basically Toxic to your body, try live in a house filled with black mold if you dare.

They burned the house not only b/c it was falling apart and the mold but they (Eva) was worried the rapist or some other bad person would come around. With no house it's unlikely anyone would stick around looking for them.

^^ Unfortunately, that is untrue:

There is no way to know for sure if it is toxic or not without testingso ALWAYS better safe than sorry.

I think this has more of a symbolic meaning as in letting go of the past and moving on.
As far as the abandoned houses go Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't there only one abandoned house they drive by with their dad? And this was almost 2 years ago, plus we don't really know how far it is.
I'm assuming that Eva is still heavily traumatized by the rape and afraid of Stan coming back, that's why she would rather see that people who knew them think they're dead.
They probably took some of the most important things from the house and went for the tree. However, it doesn't mean they are going to stay there. Perhaps they decide to stay there for a few weeks and then head for Boston.
I do, however, think they could've waited a day or two and not go out in the pouring rain with a newborn. -

No idea. This ending completely drew me out of the story. It made no sense.
Ooh I just had a baby let's burn down our house and live in a tree!! That'll be safer for the baby than fixing the roof and cleaning out the mold
. Literally anything else would've been a better idea than burning down their shelter, resources, information books, etc. -

I'm annoyed that they chose THAT night, in the rain, to wander off but I think burning the house down is an attempt at gaining control over SOMEthing. Until that point they kept getting screwed over by things out of their control (dad dies, rape, house caving in).

I think Eva felt even more vulnerable with the baby. Like they were sitting ducks. Especially when they smelt the camp fire of someone else earlier. They should have gone with Nell's boyfriend or made their way back to town after dad died. Safety in numbers and all that.
