- why were there so many cans of dog food in the house? at no point in any of the pictures or flashbacks was there any sign of a dog ever living in that house.
- who's fire did they smell? they made that seem like an awfuly big deal to just completely not follow up on that.
3)what happened with eli? would have been nice if they followed up on that too.. - what happened, period? was it ever explained or was it just 'whoops, plot killed electricity and somehow satellites too, deal with it' ?

When they went to the store 10 days after the outage, they got a bunch of unmarked cans and a huge bag of salt, among other things. They even joked about it later, with the dad opening one of the cans and Nell guessing it was peaches. Apparently all the cans in that aisle were dog food, but they wouldn't have known that when they got them because all the labels were gone. - who's fire did they smell? they made that seem like an awfully big deal to just completely not follow up on that.
No idea. It's implied that it's a random camper. I think the point of this in the story was just to show how unsafe Eva was feeling. It was adding to her paranoia to know that people were out there near them somewhere.

We know what happened to Eli. He set off to walk to Boston. Whether or not he made it, who knows? That's kind of the point though - that the girls were cut off from all communication, no radio, no internet. How would they have followed up on that? - what happened, period? was it ever explained or was it just 'whoops, plot killed electricity and somehow satellites too, deal with it' ?
Yeah they did kind of explain that also. At the beginning, right before it went out, the news said there were massive outages all along the coast. Once it went out though, there'd be no good way of learning more than that unless it came back on again, which it never did.
