Ok was just told by my friend who read an article that stated that it was actually John Cho's own idea to have Sulu's partner in the movie to be an Asian also. The reason being is because John said he hoped it would inspire other Asian gays to be more confident about their sexuality, in reality there are much less Asian homosexuals, most homosexuals are white.
