Kinda aspirational in a way. Dude has made millions from the game and film, from something that looks and feels like a student pissing around on a games engine

Just to get the right people to download it. You need people who have an audience, like gaming publications or youtubers/streamers, that decide to pluck your game out of the sea of obscurity and get the word out to the masses. There's thousands of good games that never get that lucky break and no one ends up playing.

This game in particular was especially lucky.
Increase in popularity
In June 2023, following the implosion of the Titan submersible, Iron Lung experienced a surge in popularity and sales, with some comparing aspects of the video game with the real-world circumstances of the five victims onboard Titan, such as the inability to open the submersible from the inside. Szymanski expressed his discomfort at the increased sales in multiple tweets, first posting a weekly sales chart from Steam with the words "This feels so wrong"[12][13] and further remarking that the thought of Titan's occupants being trapped in a similar scenario was "pretty horrific, even if it was their own bad decisions."
