She has a tough exterior because 1, she's from Brooklyn and 2, she's a sex worker, where she has to be tough and ward off possible potential rapists and men who act inappropriately. She cannot show vulnerability.
There's a reflection of this with how she responded to her captors.
This is all in stark contrast to how she treated Ivan, particularly after they were married. She was sweet, faithful, and kind to him. She was protective of him.
And when he called her "stupid" later, she didn't even battle back like she'd usually do. She was just hurt. Because she loved him.

She was NOT in it for the money. At no point was she shown to be after Ivan's money. She never asked him for anything monetary. What she longed for was his affection.
When Ivan first proposed, she initially stayed in character as a sex worker.
"Oh, you want me to your naughty housewife," she says.
Then when he realized he was serious (or so she thought), her eyes lit up. This was the first time a man saw her as more than just an object. They saw her as a wife. Maybe she wasn't in love with Ivan necessarily, but she was in love with the idea of a meaningful relationship, that a man could possibly see her as a wife and not a cum dumpster.
She cried when Ivan said he had "fun" with her, solidifying that it was just a week with a sex worker him.
During the climax, Igor gave her the ring and brought her suitcases up the stairs for her. In her world, men only do things when their intent is transactional. She went into sex worker mode. When Igor tried to kiss her, which is typically off limits in sex work, she responded by attacking him, a clear defense to ward of potential rapists. When Igor did not retaliate, she realized at the moment it wasn't transactional for him. She's never felt a man have true intimate feelings for her, and she broke down emotionally.

Anora was in love with being proposed to. Even if Ivan wasn't necessarily the one, she was grateful that a man saw her as a wife and not a sex object. This is new world for her. She was willing to make it work with him.
Never once is it even hinted at she's after money. She's even under him while he plays video games. She's into wifely duties.
When the Armenian mob showed up, per orders of Ivan's father, and forced them to get this annulled, she stood by her husband hoping he'd stand up to them. When he escaped leaving her there, she is shocked at first, but still gives him the benefit of the doubt.
She tries so hard to be a good wife and support her husband. She makes excuses for him. As tough and aggressive as she is to everyone else, she's always nice and sweet to her husband. She's so intent on being a good, loyal, supportive wife and not screwing this up. It's endearing actually.
While she and the mob are searching for runaway Ivan, she holds on to the slither of hope that Ivan still cares about her and will defend her honor and their marriage.
When Ivan is found and doesn't want to discuss this with Anora, she's slowly starting to realize, but she still gives him the benefit of the doubt. She's in denial. It's sad.
Then when Ivan assures her that she's "stupid" for thinking it was real, but that the time spent was with her was "fun," that was the final nail on the coffin. She gets teary-eyed, but doesn't fight. She's hurt. All along, Ivan only thought of her as a sex worker for his entertainment.
Then that ending.
Igor gives her the wedding ring he wasn't supposed to give her. He wasn't expecting anything in return. He takes her bags up for her. Igor is the only person to show Anora any semblance of compassion without sexualizing her.
In Anora's world, when a man gives her something of value, they expect sex. This is all she knew. She subconsciously turns into "sex worker" mode and makes the move on Igor.
Igor is shocked. He wasn't expecting this.
He leans into kiss her. She backs away. Kissing is off limits in sex work. He leans in again, then she hits him repeatedly.
In her mind, she's warding off a rapist who crossed the line. She's programmed to hit when customers cross the line.
But Igor did not fight back. He is shocked.
Then she realizes, this wasn't transactional.
She feels real intimacy and love for the very first time, and she breaks down. Igor hugs her.
It's a beautiful film, really. It makes me cry discussing it.

Ivan had housekeepers for that. They had only been married a few days before the seize. She wasn’t acting like a sex either. She completely changed her demeanour around him.
Even when she looked bored he was playing video games, she stayed right beside him. She never complained. She was so loyal and servile to him.
That's why when Ivan dumbed her before they boarded the plane, she told his mom that she wanted a lawyer and was trying to get what a wife would get.
You have this backwards.
It is Ivan who used Anora, not the other way around.
Anora trusted Ivan really loved her. She was so happy to be a wife, and have a man that really cared for her, that even when Ivan ran out on her, she was making excuses for him that he must have had a good reason. She was in denial.
Even when Anora found him in the strip club, she did not even argue with him for running out on her, and literally just cheating on her. No name-calling. She was still displaying her loving wife duties to him even then.
When Ivan chose go along with his parents and called her “stupid” and called her a “fun week” that’s when he broke her heart.
So yes of course, when she realised Ivan didn’t love her, and her kidnapping, berating, and assault by Ivan’s family, she’s totally justified in entertaining the option of getting revenge by divorcing him and taking half.

Who cares if his parents send money or not. She already knew he was rich. She thought that was his house. Who cares how he gets his income.
Think of Anora as a dichotomy between her exterior and her inner self.
Ani was the exotic dancer. She was tough, stubborn, and was in control of men and situations, uncomfortable speaking Russian.
Anora was her true self. She was sensitive, vulnerable, wanted the to be loved and wanted the duties of a wife.
After she married him, she dropped the Ani and became Anora. Her walls were down. She trusted him. She thought he loved her. She spoke more Russian around him.
Examples:
When she’s handling the henchman, she’s Ani. She beats them up. Only when they tie her legs does she genuinely get scared and plead for mercy. Anora has had traumatic experiences being tied up.
When Anora meets her mother-in-law, she respectfully asks for her blessing in Russian. She’s told her Russian is awful and she’s a loser whore basically. This is her being rejected as ANORA and we see her emotionally hurt.
When Ivan told her it was over but thanked her for the fun time, she’s holding back tears. She’s hurt. She reverts back into ANI, “Oh yeah, you had fun?” as if he were a customer. She doesn’t want to admit she had feelings for him and he hurt her. As Ani she’s in control.
Ending: ANI can have sex and feel no emotional attachment. She became ANORA during.
This film has so many layers to it you are missing. Empaths will get it.

He had all the benefits of a rich person. He can travel when he wanted. Buy whatever. He was rich.
And Anora peeped all that after they ****ed the first time. RIGHT???
As a customer of his, possibly. She wasn’t interested in his stuff. She was only interested in what he paid for her time. After, that wasn’t important after they got married. She even threw back the “mink” coat and scarf when she left them. She signed an annulment. She wasn’t interested in his money internally.
I feel like Anora still got the short end of the stick.
If Baron Trump regrettably got married to a stripper after a drunken night in vegas with no prenup, I feel like Trump and Melania would pay her upwards of $1 Million to get her out of the picture.

I say no. That’s contrary to the message.

Well, if he wasn’t rich, then Anora couldn’t have used him for money he doesn’t have, which is contrary to your first point here.
What do you think being “rich” means? It means you
have
money. It doesn’t mean you’ve earned it. He had his parents unlimited money to spend. He was rich.
When the henchman showed up, it was a turn off for her when he couldn’t stand up to them. Henceforth, she started to realise he was immature and not self-sufficient, but she held on to hope until the end - and assuming the best about her husband like a good wife.
