Any evidence for that? Seems nowawdays, people tend to try to excuse crimes by minorities to a far larger extent than crimes by Whites. (Ferguson, Trayvon Martin, BLM, etc.) Ever hear anyone complaining about the far larger number of whites shot by cops?

Not surprisingly, most people won't notice or they will ignore it.
        Not even just "most people."
Having had several of my own bikes stolen in the past, I once witnessed a guy going to town on a bike lock in broad daylight in New York City. So I called the police to ask that they send an officer to check it out. The dispatcher asked me how did I know it wasn't the guy's own bike. Like it was my job to investigate when someone was trying to break open a lock. Sheesh! And of course, the police never sent anybody, couldn't care less.

Its certainly risky stealing a bike in daylight, but its possible. All he has to do is walk up, cut the lock, and zip off on the bike. If he doesnt make it look sketchy, he'll be on the bike and gone before anyone starts to notice and react.

He had the tools in the opening scene to cut the fence so a quick cable lock cut would be easy. Answered my own question.

Most bike locks are typically tubular locks, if he often steals things like this, he may very well have a tubular lock pick. They pretty much pick the lock for you, as these are very easy locks to open with a tubular pick, and to any onlookers, it would simply look like he had the key and unlocked the bike.

It's one of those wire lock things that anyone can cut with a pair of garden scissors. But agreed, I see tons of the arrant U locks around Toronto. I have a heavy chain with a heavy duty key lock I bought from Home Hardware for my ride. Why? I lived in Holland where bike is the major mode of transportation and protecting your ride is important.

I don't know how Pawn Shops works in Los Angeles or the USA however here in Australia if you sell something to a pawn shop who have to fill out a form with like 100 points of Identification. For example you need you Drivers Licence/Passport, Medicare Card/ Credit Card and/or even your Birth Certificate/Bank Statement with you address.
That carbon fibre bike would have been worth 1000s of $ so I can't believe the cops wouldn't canvass local pawn shops?!
If you are not willing to give up everything, you have already lost

In Canada, every serial number is reported to the Police. I would always see cops at the pawn shop round the corner from me.
Plus that wire lock he uses wouldn't pass mustard herebike theft is rampant in Toronto as i'm sure every where else. Having living in Holland, the bike is an important mode of transportation. Everyone had heavy duty locks. So I got one myself.

Well its one of three options then:

                      1. Pawn shops in that area aren't under strict regulation.
                      2. Pawn shops in that area are under strict regulation, but the one Lou went to was sketchy and didnt follow the regulations. The owner might have kept the transaction off the books and banked on selling it before anyone noticed.
                      3. Lou gave his info or had fake info to give the pawn shop.

hmmm interesting. Here in Toronto there's a massive bike theft problem. They caught the ringer 'Ivan' who had an 'office' or showroom on Queen West but apparently had 2 or 3 warehouses full of bikes. 1 right next to a Police station! cheeky bastard. I actually just talked to an officer who's taking care of my phone theft. He's had many a bike stolen! I lived in Holland where the bike is a major form of transportationno hills btw, just the odd arch over a canal. But everyone had heavy duty locks..big chains. So I got one here. Brilliant film btw.

Like I said that bike he stole was a several thousand dollar carbon fibre racing bike and he puts a weak chain link lock around it that could be cut with tin snips. I own a $700 Mountain Bike and I spent a little bit more and cut a 14mm thick U-lock which not even bolt cutters will chew through and it mounts internally in the frame.

What did happen to a mate here in Australia who had a very expensive road racing bike for sale stolen. Instead of Craigslist we have a multi sales type website called Gumtree and what happened is that he did get several calls and people came around to look at it at his home address. The criminals must have been casing his house never turned up for their viewing and his house was broken into and his bike stolen. However Detectives did end up catching the perpetrators as there is only a small market for a road bike of that value and our Pawn Shops are heavily vetted and VERY rarely buy stolen products as they will be seized and the Pawn Shop is out the money they paid for it and face big fines!
