They were stealing them so that Rick could say they were stolen, get reimbursed from their insurance and probably sell the stolen ones on the black market or scrap metal, or simply re-install them. Basic insurance fraud.

Correct..some homes were stripped by thieves near me in CA during the RE crash, for the metal value. Rick Carver had a scam going.
