for me i enjoyed the movie the UE much more not a classic but a good popcorn flick but to answer your question first and foremost jesse eisenberg was wrong and didn't fit the role big mistake on casting him as lex and second there was two maybe more classic comic book arcs throw in to the movie "TDNR The death of superman" to name two instead of following one story line and getting it right and thirdly cutting the runtime by 30 minutes leaving it confusing and clunky the real film was meant be was the UE but the executives at WB took the decision to remove thirty important parts of the movie they must have seen both versions so why on earth the theatrical version was released is beyond me and its for this i give zack znyder some slack

Op your asking for one main reason when there are so many reasons and mistakes. Both mos and bvs are the go to of what not to do in a Superman or even a Batman movie. It's a recipe for disaster and the audience and critical reception ripped this film apart and deservedly so. Hack Snyder basically tried and fail to copy Nolan with the worse unlikeable Superman possible and making him a sociopath raised by the worse version of the Kent's ever. Then we have a Lois lane who shoehorn in scenes that she doesn't even need to be in can figure out, and even have a romantic relationship with even though that felt hollow in less then 24 hrs. Hell even that pussy lex can figure out who Superman really is before Bruce Wayne/Batman who's supposed to be the world's greatest detective. Then we have a Batman who is basically a punisher ripoff branding people and having no problems killing for the sake of killing. Snyder killing off such a vital character to the Superman mythology Jimmy Olsen just for kicks was messed up. Shoving to many storylines in one film was just plain stupid what kind of story was Snyder trying to tell? Then we get teenage mutant ninja Lord of the rings doomsday troll. Seriously? However even piece of sh!t films like this have a fan base which shows that some people will like anything no matter what it is.

Thats the best way I can sum it up. Theres so many things going wrong at once that you cant just say it is one single thing.
If it was one single thing and the rest of the movie was good then it would be a good film. -

It was made.
Seriously, this is such a perfect storm of sh!t with so many looming problems it's not possible to nail just one down.
Bad writing, bad editing, bad storyline, horrible directing, tries to do too much, horrible characterizations of iconic characters, .. etc etc etc the list just goes on and on.Thanks to Batmeh v Supermeh Yawn of Justice, the "S" now stands for Sidekick -

For me, the primary crux of this movie's main reason for failure is Jesse Eisenberg's interpretation of Lex Luthor. As the main villain he came across simply irritating. Reminded me almost like a character version of Martin Shkreli of Turing Pharma, just a guy you want to punch in the face rather than be fearful of. Blame him or under the directorship of Zack Snyder, either way, there was not much depth to his character. As a result, everything collapses. His schemes to setup the two heroes, his resurrecting a final monster. All not believable and epic fail in story line and movie plot.
Jeremy Iron, a great actor was just reading his lines for his role.
Amy Adams seemed to be the right casting for Lois Lane but she too failed to deliver a great performance. I just see too much Amy Adams playing Amy Adams and not Lois Lane.
Overall, total responsibility for this movie failure rests on the shoulders of the Director, Zack Snyder. Unfortunately the bigger the film production becomes, the easier it is for the Director to lose sight of proper character development and good story line. You just get too busy with the scene production, special effects, big name actors, etc. Zack had to spend an inordinate amount of time trying to build a credible situation to have Batman go head to head against Superman. And even that effort failed in it's credibility.
