Hard Eight was fine. I give it a bit of leeway for being a first effort. And Inherent Vice was a lot more fun than this and didn't seem to take itself as seriously.
A script with revolutionaries posing as weed-growing nuns, a sensei who is also a Latino Harriet Tubman, a nefarious group called the Christmas Adventurers Club, and characters named Jungle Pussy and Colonel Lockjaw has the makings of a damn good Tarantino movie or full-fledged satire, not a three-hour dead serious drama, with only one laugh to be found.

😂 I only just said to another poster that I was expecting dead serious drama and want expecting it to be funny.
Looks like we had the exact opposite experience with this movie.

Tbf, I was in a pretty terrible mood when I watched it 😂 So I will see it again sometime to make sure I'm giving it a fair shot. I do suspect it's better than my initial impression because I'm still remembering a lot of details about it now.

I went in not knowing anything about it other than the director and two actors. And considering the actors, I just assumed it was going to be heavy drama, but it was pretty funny. It's only now that I see anyone taking it dead seriously. To me, it comes across as satire, with only people it struck a nerve getting all upset about it (bonus points imo).

So far, this is one of the greatest movies of the 21st century!
It is destined to become a classic!

The screenplay nomination is understandable. There's probably nothing particularly wrong with the screenplay. Anderson simply did a shockingly poor job of directing it. He wrote a piece of entertaining pulp fiction and took it far too seriously once he was in the director's chair, completely killing the screenplay's potential.

All fair points, but it also reasonable to point out that the direction has received praise as well.
I think you'll find things are a little more complicated than that.

One Battle After Another and Adolescence have led this year's Golden Globes with four wins apiece. Paul Thomas Anderson's counterculture epic took home best comedy or musical film. It also earned him best director and screenplay, marking his first-ever Golden Globe wins.

I make this the ninth reply to me with this same wording in a day or so. Have you nothing better to than cyberstalk me with this childish reply, lol? Guess not.

But then I think about the time I met an old, filthy homeless man. He took me out for dinner. We sat opposite each other at a very busy table. He bought/stole for me the necklace I was wearing. I raised my sickly paw to the necklace and made a high-pitched meowing noise as we both made eye-contact.
