I've watched the first two and a half episodes and so far I'm not very impressed by either the rather bland characters or the story which doesn't feel very focused. It might be unfair but I can't help comparing it to Battlestar Galactica which did a fantastic job of setting up the characters and the story within the first couple of hours, it had a kind of forward momentum that I fon't really see in this show. Is this show more of a slow burn? Does it get better later on in the season or does it keep going on in this meandering fashion?

BSG (2003 reimagined series) pulled me in within the first 20 minutes of the pilot. (and BSG has incredible rewatch value, I've seen the entire series 3 times in the last 7 years, as well as the webisodes and the two movies).
The Expanse took me about 3-4 episodes to get into, or the pilot and then the next three after, and the show just got better and better from that point onward. I am glad I stuck with it. I hope this show will have immense rewatch value one day but it's still a little early for me to say right now. -

Well from what little I do remember, wasn't Battlestar mostly about surviving and finding their way back home? That tends to lend itself towards more action, which I'm not knocking by the way. The Expanse just seems more political and intriguing, and just takes more time to setup. Will admit it took me awhile before I knew the stories and the show was really going somewhere. Definitely a slowburn as many have already stated. To me, it was well worth it. New episodes can't get here fast enough for me, and I find myself wanting to re-watch episodes all the time.

I guess comparisons to BSG are inevitable–THE EXPANSE is certainly the best thing in that genre since BSG–but the two should be judged on their own merits. BSG begins with just about the biggest bang possible: the end of humanity. THE EXPANSE takes place on a lot more fronts than GALACTICA did. There's a lot of political intrigue and plots within plots and there are no shortcuts to introducing all of it. The further it goes, the better it gets. A great show.
