All the couples are so weird together.

I just started watching & I'm already on S3, but I keep asking myself, why does
this
character like
that
character? So many people get together & I have no idea what one sees in the other.
Why did Sarah like Tammy? She looked like a walking stereotype. And also Tammy's wife did not look like Tammy's type just based on looks & Tammy's ego.
Why was the hot trainer into Ali with the way she carries herself? Why did Syd still have feelings for Ali? Why does Ali like Leslie?
What do any of these girls see in Josh? Money, ok. But why did Raquel get together with Josh? Just because she wanted a family? Why did Shea like Josh? Why did Josh like Shea? It just seemed like he wanted an experience. I was low key shipping them a bit though until Josh started acting like an idiot.
Maura & Vicky getting together was just so odd. They meet & then BAM they're together. Why?
What do these character see in one another because at least one half of every relationship this show has had, one of those halves had like no redeeming qualities. All three of the children are so messed up. Emotionally & sexually it seems. What gives? Where's the connection. It can't just be because their parents weren't perfect. Not one of them is anywhere close to being normal. And they're all selfish as hell.
Even Maura has become extremely self centered.
If the show was just about Maura, Devina & Shea, I'd still watch & probably enjoy it more.

Their being messed up is largely explained by the inherited trauma, the epigenetics that was discussed in the S2 episode called "Cherry Blossoms". That's why they kept showing segments from Berlin 1933 and how it parallels the Pfefferman family today.
In terms of the kids, they are all sex addicts, as well as being spoiled brats and emotionally adrift. In terms of Maura, she's just very lonely, as we see in that tapas restaurant scene where she tries to pick up the first woman who sits down near her.
I felt that S3 is the least enjoyable or interesting of the seasons, as some of the kids' plotlines are running on empty and recycling themes already done.
I enjoyed this article someone posted on another thread:

I've felt this way since season 1. I think they pushed it a little bit when they made Amy L character leave her husband for Tammy. The youngest character being an aimless spazz and liking a trans guy bc her dad and it's trendy, etc. rang true to me. The son is straight like most men in the world, the mom is straight like most women. So both daughters and the dad being LGBTQ was too much of a stretch of the imagination AND what you say is true, those couples are so badly paired. The hot trainer liking Ali for anything besides a pot smoking friend maybe friend with benefits seemed unrealistic unless he has sex with anyone because Ali doesn't take care of herself the way he did. Tammy? Made no sense, neither did Maura and Anjelica Houston. Shel and Buzz fit and I understood the Shae attraction for Josh. Shae looks like a pretty girl and Josh is a straight man who is not a prude or super conservative.
Josh and Raquel grew on me. I think they should reconcile now and have babies. -

I see what you mean and similar thoughts have crossed my mind but beauty is in the eye of the beholder, after all. Have you seen Tig Notaro's (who played Tammy's wife) real-life wife? She's objectively a hottie. And take other real-life couples like Sarah Paulson and Holland Taylor. I think this show reflects the reality that sometimes people's attractions and connections to one another don't always "make sense" to outsiders.

I think Sarah's longing for Tammy while she was married to Len stems from her being self-destructive and selfish. She has a nice life with two cute kids and a nice husband. She has to blow it all apart, it's who she is. Just like she blathered on about millenials and bj's to the Synagogue Board during the initial meeting with them. I think Raquel liked Josh because he is cute and he comes off as likeable at first. Her being a Rabbi, she was trying to guide him and make him a better man. And he, like Sarah, is self destructive. He was testing her their whole relationship to see how much she could take before she left. I have no idea what Allie sees in Leslie, she is so stereotypical and creepy. I do like Vicky and Maura, but Maura can't handle a person who accepts her for who she is, unless it's just a friend like Davina or Shea.

Sarah and Tammy and Josh and Raquel didn't feel unrealistic to me. All of Allie's involvements have been bizarrely random, maybe even just pathetic attempts to get attention on her part - rich white girl first sleeps with her black trainer (I don't have a problem with interracial relationships, but some people look at is as shocking), attracted to a trans man (much like Josh was attracted to Shea)only to back out of it, suddenly becomes a lesbian and sleeps with her best friend, then on to a much older woman who seems to patronize her.
