but no one tries to kill EVERY soldier that comes at you. If they surrender, then you HAVE to take them as prisoners of war or you're the monster
Look at the Japanese during ww2

trust methey try. There was a battle during WW I that only 1 (literally one) soldier survived.
If they surrender, then you HAVE to take them as prisoners of war
Yeah in the perfect world, guess what, we do not live in perfect world. keeping prisoners of war requires a lot of infrastructure, when you are fighting as a guerilla fighter you simply do not have place to put them. So you kill them, or mame them so they will become drain on enemy resources, the point of anti-personal mines is not to kill enemy, but to hurt him so he will require hospitalisation which costs money.
      you're the monster
Yes, that is exactly what war is, monstrocity. What did you think it is some more hardcore version of paintball? It is not about being fair or obeying the rules, you do what you have to do to win, you are a monster so your grandchildren can turn their heads in disgust from you, and you are happy for it, because you protected them, repelled invaders and kept them safe. Hopefully they will never have to understand what you didand you pray every night for that.

Yes, because they are an alien race and it is complete absurdity to argue against them using real world humanized emotional ideals.
Seriously, it's war, it's not supposed to be clean and friendly.
To defend yourself, you should have the right to use anything at your disposal.
We don't know their history, we don't know anything about them, or why they would use it.
But from a completely removed from emotions look, it does make sense.

          I don't know about that.
In ww1 both sides used chemical weapons against each other and afterwards almost every nation banned them because of the devastating effects they inflict. as far as I know, the only time since ww1 that any nation has used chemical weapons since then was Iraq, first against the Iranians in their 10 year war with them and again against the Kurds
The horror that chemical weapons unleash is to terrible to imagine and one that can turn against the user with just a change of wind direction

tonights flash episode of the crossover actually shed some light on why medusa was made. (not outright stating it but its clearly implied)
the dominators visited krypton in Karas universe. she remembers tales and probably history lessons about that. the dominators killed thousands, abducted thousands.
it would be reasonable to think that kryptons science council would want a weapon to stop that from happening again.

              Maybe
But chemical weapons have been banned here on Earth, the real Earth for quite some time for VERY good reasons

yeah.. the reason being that WE cant make them target only a specific "race".
you can bet your ass that if the USA(or other involved worldpower) had access to "kills only people who self identify as ISIS members" weapons, theyd use them in a heartbeat.

There was an episode from the first season of Babylon 5 about a weapon created by an alien race that targets anyone who wasn't a "pure" member of their own race during a war against alien invaders but they used the ideological example of their own race rather than the genetic example of their own race which backfired on them and destroyed THEIR own race after destroying their enemies
WMDs don't solve problems, they create new ones

doesnt change the fact that the military of any nation on earth would drown any scientist in "here take whatever you want, wanna have your own science city with underlings?" type of rewards if he or she could give them a programmable virus that targets and quickly kills only what they want killed and then just turns inert and dies off.
Babylon 5 wanted to make a moral statement. im stating what would happen in the real world if "programmable virus that can kill only what we want it to kill" was a real thing.
there HAVE been programs to develop "kill only black people" bombs and such things in the real world. all of them failures, but still.

Hell, I saw an episode of Elementary (I think it was that show) that they designed a virus that only killed the descendants of Genghis Kahn, the most prolific single breeding male on Earth
