Was wondering if I have to see the movies before the series to get it.

It probably would make sense without seeing the films but why on Earth wouldn't you want to start at the beginning?
As much as I love this show, the films are (for the most part) better and they essentially amount to the first 3 episodes of the show (they just happen to be feature-length episodes).
Not to mention that a fair few gags and awesome moments in the series are references to the original trilogy.

It's a direct sequel to Army of Darkness.
It works as a direct sequel to both Army of Darkness and Evil Dead II.
The only one that it's not a direct sequel to is The Evil Dead. (Plenty of specific references are made to the second film, not to mention things like Ash having a chainsaw for a hand).

Exactly. It is a direct sequel to both Army of Darkness and Evil Dead II. The atmosphere is straight from Army of Darkness. But much of what is referenced comes from Evil Dead II.
You can watch the series without seeing the films. But it would be a lot more enjoyable if you watched them. And I would definitely watch both Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness. You don't have to watch Evil dead I if you don't want to as Evil Dead II is basically just a reboot of Evil Dead I and stands alone. There is a big argument about whether it is a remake or just a sequel. No matter which camp you are in you can easily just watch Evil Dead II and be fine. -

the movie trilogy is around 4 and a half hours long give or take.
the first season is a little bit longer than that
so if your too lazy to watch 3 films then you wont be able to handle the first season either -

What's the appeal otherwise?
It's a very original Horror-Comedy TV series featuring an unique lead character.

Well, the first "movie" was apparently only a short.
But the first actual movie have another canon than the second movie (More people that are simply removed in the second movie) plus the first actual movie has more horror unlike the following movies that have comedy as well. -

The third movie is a different canon as well by the same argument
and the series is a different canon as well with the same argument
all different Lindas
But this series makes it clear Ash went to the cabin with Friends
making the first 5 minutes of Evil Dead 2 noncanon
