Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Ash vs Evil Dead

    william_taylor — 9 years ago(November 17, 2016 08:30 AM)

Ash having the book: so this trailer park dwelling loser went to England and carried out an excavation (remembering a 12th century Lord Arthur had the book)? Or the book was moved and then he quested for it? How exactly did this loser Ash get the book? What were his resources? At least this would have made for a more interesting story
Ash is a trailer park loser: Fine, he could be, but his attitude is unbelievable and no audience could invest in this Ash except die-hard fans. This is a man who chopped up his girlfriend, travelled through time and must have escaped a mental institution or something - a total outcast. If protecting the book wasn't his last purpose in life he'd probably have taken his own life. He's not dreaming of life in Jacksonville.
How I'd Have Wrote it Better: Pilot
Opening scene: it's a turbulent night, the camera pans up and it's Ash, orange flames illuminate his features. He's been crying, he's starting to look pissed. The camera pans out, his home has been consumed with a raging fire, a few houses are destroyed, and there's debris everywhere. He has a little soft toy with "Cheryl" on it, with an attached "Happy 13th" balloon. He lets this go, as it sails into the night it's struck by lightening, bursts. Ash grabs his prosthetic hand, tears it off, goes to throw it into the fire, but drops it at his feet Our hero is back and he has nothing to lose.
    1 Week Earlier:
We're introduced to old Ash as a family man who became an academic in Sumerian and the occult or something similar. See, when Ash travelled back in time the reason he's not arrested or institutionalised is because the timeline was reset. The book never made it to that cabin. Ash worked at S-Mart, a blowhard weirdo recovering from the worst PTSD, and studied at Michigan University.
So, modern day, through his contacts, Ash discovers that the book has resurfaced in Boscastle, England. Being the foremost expert, and worrying about this day his whole life, he ensures that the book is flown over to him (at Michigan University because he's a lecturer there). It's planned to be brought over by the two English archaeologists who discovered it. Ash will pick them up in the morning. That plane set off but it never touched down.
In the night as the flight gets possessed by deadites and unspeakable evils Ash becomes haunted with dreams and visions, his daughter screams in the night as the tortured souls of the English archaeologists appear warning of her family's demise. Ash worries about it all. He settles his daughter - it's her birthday tomorrow and she's hunted the house for that special toy but Ash teases she'll never find it - and then he assures his wife. He stays up a while, begins to hallucinate things, he gets jumpy, begins to lose his beep runs to the bathroom and tries to take his pills, he considers whether or not the chainsaw and sawed-off might need to come out He's conflicted. Checks his alarm and goes back to bed.
Early morning Ash is driving his Oldsmobile to the Michigan airport. Familiar roads begin to look odd. Voices call out to him. A portal opens up. beep His car smashes into the areoplane at 15,000ft and it's taking a dive. He's wedged in it now as the cabin loses pressure. The windscreen shatters as Ash is pulled into the cabin and then force-pushed Evil Dead 2 style into the door of the cockpit. It's like a scene from Hellraiser, panicked passengers and deadites in slow motion, Ash's ears are ringing. Ash notices two disembowelled passengers, one wearing a Southampton University (cause that's where the archaeologists were from) emblem, they have the book and it's chewing on their guts! Ash grabs it and flicks through the pages. He knows the language now. He can make this right. And he does. The evil is exorcised, cabin pressure returns, the plane lands Ash gets smug, wins an award, thinks it's too easy wakes up. Checks his alarm? It's 5a.m. time to set off. Checks in on his daughter. Smiles. Sneaks out to car. Grabs teddy with "Cheryl" on it and the balloon, turns on his heel.
KABOOM!!!! Plane crashes into his house. It's chaos. (His car is a survivable distance, maybe he pissed and moaned about never getting a good spot before hand) Returns to opening scene.
    "Join us."
beep epic pilot and it takes the whole show in another much cooler direction.

You are dead wrong and i'll tell you why : you actually put effort into creating a feasible storyline. Lazy does it for their writing team so you'll never be on the credits.
Thanks, now if feel even more p!ssed knowing what could have been with a little old fan enthousiasm behind the typewriter

an archaeologist did find the book. Ash happened upon it while squatting for the weekend in his cabin.
                  Ash is a megalomaniac.
                  imo
