We thought this was a plot hole as well, but the DCI traced the number back to her landlady recalled her and who threw her out after her skinhead boyfriend showed up. So Beth must have been staying at this woman's house and not a squat during those few weeks she was clean and Jimmy was teaching her to read and write. So she must have given him her number from that place.
