i mean, she's fine. i like her. but putting her face and/or name full-frame on the movie poster is not selling anyone on it.
Gyllenhaal, maybe. He does weird movies and really commits to the parts. I can see someone being loyal to his "brand". But Adams is justanother just actress who pops up in 1-2 award-bait films and another 1-2 every year or so.
I guess no one's rushing out to see it on the back of anyone involved, really - Tom Ford isn't an established director. Michael Shannon probably isn't the lead, or enough of one to sell the movie around.
I pity the marketing team for this one.

I wouldn't say I'm a fan of hers but, whether you like it or not, she's become a recognizable name. The fact that you referred to her only in your thread testifies that you recognize her. Maybe you don't like her movies or her looks or her acting or whatever else but you still recognized her and felt enough emotion to come comment on it on IMDb 😉
Basically, you just contributed to the marketing of Amy and consequently the movie.

i went to see Arrival opening day (and enjoyed it!). i didn't go because of her, and while she's good in it, i didn't like it because of her.
i don't dislike her. i just don't get the idea that she has a rabid fanbase, and (thusly) why a movie studio would market a movie around her (i.e. Movie Poster is Just Her Face).
I mean, jennifer aniston, i get (hence: Cake). Same with Nicole Kidman (Birth, Stepford Wives, etc).

Amy Adams has a new movie out?! TAKE MY MONEY!
There. I just said it, jerk! Like Gyllenhaal, but much prefer Amy Adams. I'd throw Jake over any day for her.

i went to see Arrival too, but i would've gone to see it no matter who starred in it. Well, maybe not Tobey Maguire. Can't stand that guy.
I guess i just don't see how she would have a rabid fanbase. Sure, she's likable and she's a good actress; she just doesn't engender that kind of enthusiasm.

DoodleBoy, who hurts you? Amy does not serve enthusiasm? But flopstar like Anniston does? I think you are jealous to see her recognition. So sad for you. People go to see her movies based on her name bro. Don't hurt yourself like this. That woman did Blockbuster hit Enchanted in 2007 and Night at the Museum 2 in 2009 by herself as lead actress. That woman made indie movie Junebug a hit. She is 6 times Oscar Nominee. Oh my sadistic boy. God Brace yourself.
