How would one go about defending himself in a situation like this?

I could be wrong, but i believe that was the point. Tony didn't even put up a fight, knowing the men didn't have a gun. Even when he was dragged out of the car and left at the dead endzero fight in him. He's weak.

I don't understand why he never tried to speed off but that was symbolism when he did not put up the fight back at the restaurant scene where the mother tells susan that he is weak that part of the book shows his weakness

Regardless of what the overseas press may say, most Americans don't have guns. Not only that, but most of the ones that do have one do not carry it in their car. I've been on this planet for more than 50 years (in the USA, no less) and I have never owned a gun. I have no intention of ever owning one, either.

A lot of Vin Diesel fans have strayed onto this board. They sit in their mom's basement and delude themselves all of life's problems can be solved by a Bushmaster and some martial arts moves -

Indeed. The novel is symbolic for his marriage to Susan. He considers himself weak for not having fought to make it work. Susan is represented by the criminals, the nocturnal animals, who brutally killed his wife (marriage), daughter (whom she literally killed) and ultimately himself.

It appeared really strange to me that none of those (American!) characters carried a gun.
I bet you're some snobbishly naive European who has never been to America but thinks mass shootings are a common and that everyone carries a gun or is very rich or whatever other ignorant stereotypes I can't think of.
All hail the underdogs
All hail the new kids
All hail the outlaws

I guess being an American setting, the American solution : big gun, semi or fully automatic, bigger the better.
Rest Of The World ? Not sure. You probably wouldn't run into people like that anywhere else anyway.
Unless you are in Iraq, Syria, other oil-rich state. And then they would be Americans. With Guns. Protecting people and stuff. -

I am not talking about the events that occured, but how one might react to them. How many people died from/were injured in gun related incidents in America in the last year ?
And long may it continue. -

Well here in Mexico, its dangerous to drive in the highways at that time. So when we have to travel we don't travel at night. We just stop at the nearest town to sleep and continue. And I think that was Tony's plan, but her daughter said something and he drop that plan.
Don't generalize of what I just said about Mexico. I live in a dangerous state and my family is very cautious.
