Haven't seen American Crime Story yet but I'm going to, later this month. But I think Stranger Things is really overrated

It's probably not for everyone but can I ask if you saw a lot of the hype before watching it?

Before watching Stranger Things? Um hell yes. EVERYONE was talking about it and saying how "great" it was. It was EVERYWHERE on Instagram. So yknow, I decided to check it out to satisfy my curiosity. And well, I didn't like it that much. I mean, it's not a bad show but it's not close to being good enough to hook me

Sorry missed your reply. Thing is, just because, well life, I completely missed all the hype.
I saw some alphabet lights on twitter, realised it was a meme but didn't look into because I was fairly busy. Also saw nmop-apisdu but thought it was just a clever way of writing upside-down kinda upside-down, really didn't make the connection and no-one at work was mentioning it.
Then I was listening to an author being interviewed about box-sets. The author had condemned superhero movies and was saying that the alternative was some really good box-sets. The interviewer suggested they watch Stranger Things, and then immediately back tracked because it contains super powers. Not much of a recommendation but I don't mind the superhero stuff so I thought I'd try it out.
So with no real recommendation it totally blew me away. Now I've got everyone I work with watching, careful not to over hype, everyone loves it, mostly watching it in 2 or 3 nights.
I think the hype damages the experience, at least for some.

I would say so, but the theme is 80s sci fi, so if you're not into watching that. you wont like it probably.
I would say it is as good as True Detective and Fargo (season 1 for both).

I'm not into 80s sci-fi and actually initially became disinterested when it was announced that the show would heavily feature sci-fi elements. Prior to that announcement, I was more interested. I decided to sit down and watch it last week because I'd heard enough good things and was looking for something new to watch, and I absolutely loved it. I binged the first four episodes in one night and then watched the remaining four over the course of the next two days. It's now easily among my favorite shows ever, and I can't wait for the second season.

                It wouldn't
Be the best show even if it literally was the only show.

Are we only counting new shows, not stuff like The Americans, Game of Thrones, BoJack Horseman, Mr. Robot, Better Call Saul and such?
Even then, it's not the best. Better shows include The Night of, Billions, Atlanta, The Night Manager.
It's not even the best show on Netflix, I found Luke Cage much better.
Haven't seen American Crime Story, Quarry or Westworld yet.

Certainly the best NEW show of the year. Obviously there is competition among the veteran shows. I don't think anything can top the final season of Person of Interest but Stranger Things is arguably Top 3 for the year for sure.

It isn't the best in terms of writing, acting or originality, but it is very entertaining and the showrunners know how to pull you in. Hopper is a strong character and very well played by David Harbour. Winona Ryder was good when she wasn't crying all the time, so I expect to see more good things from her. The teenagers and kids did a very good job for their ages, which probably says a lot about the directing.
I think the show also cleverly targets many age groups. Kids, teenagers and adults all get lots of screen time. And let's not forget that the average forty-something with kids was about the age of the kids in the show in 1983.
Basically, the show does the 80's kid flick genre very well, which means the kids are cute and there is a lot of comedy in their follies. Add a heaping helping of mystery and nostalgia and it is a very entertaining mix. Does that make it the best? I don't know. You be the judge.

It's my favourite show of the year so far but I think the new upcoming third series of Black Mirror is going to dethrone it.
