Do you think he would have pursued Nancy like he had if it wasn't for Jonathan being in the picture as competition for h

I hated that. Steve was such a douche and had no ambition and thought that sleeping with Nancy was more important than her education. I thought they might go that way when he ditched his friends but hoped I was wrong. Bleurgh.

Yeah, I do. I feel like he was "that kind of guy" due to him being almost peer pressured into believing that way of behavior was cool, mostly from his 2 loser friends.
A very typical high school trope is peer pressure. I felt like he did things and allowed certain things to happen because he thought his reputation or something was up for grabs. -

Jonathan on the other hand went his own way and did his own thing without the need to conform. Jonathan is twice the man that a lot of them are.

I still insist season 2 Dustin will enter the competition for Nancy. He will be taller, his teeth should be in, and there was a sexual tension between Dustin and Nancy.
I base my theory on when Dustin offered her sausage pizza in her bedroom. He's wanting to slip her the sausage while she lies on her bed talking on the phone with Barb? You don't have to be Frederico Fellini to figure out the subliminal sexual message there! One of these days I'm going to cut you into little pieces.

He was openly and publicly into her from the outset, inviting her to spend time with him and his friends (awful though they were). I kinda half expected him to blow her off the next day, but he didn't. Went right up to her and kissed her in the hallway. That was all before anything happened to make him jealous.
"But what about the relevant conundrum?"
