It had a lot of music documentary elements in it like Scorsese's The Last Waltz, some Spinal Tap, but the Eagles doc being the most prominent recent viewers might understand.
However, I really think there was a slight but deliberate undercurrent of the band Chicago to some extent- a tip or the hat here and there too - especially with the telling of the tale of going from Chicago to California, the 'high pitched voice' of the Blue Jean Committee's lead singer - even mentioning Peter Cetera as sort of a 'wink-wink' in-joke, having Irving Azoff as a parody of himself from the Eagles doc sure, but Irving also did manage Chicago too for a short time, and how long it took The Blue Jean Committee to get to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, of which Chicago hasn't done yet because ofwell, there are many points of view on that one and maybe The Blue Jean Committee shed a tad light on that tooI kinda picked up on that which even made this kinda reflective as well as funny.

I got some of the Eagles references. Blue collar guys capitalizing on the California sound, done with current day retrospective interviews (as opposed to the contemporaneous Last Waltz.) And the blowup over the polictical fundraiser. And the black and white pics were spot on. Plus there were some other references to other band docs.
But I didn't get the essence of the two main characters. Both stupid, one kind hearted failure and the other a total douche millionaire. I guess Frey came off as a bit of a douche in the History of the Eagles, but he was driven about the musical direction he wanted for the band.
I suppose Hader is a Henley/Frey/Meisner composite, and Armisten is Felder/Walsh, but if so it came off haphazard imo.
The sickest part of the real doc was the love-to-hate rift with David Geffen. And then when Henley and Frey renegotiated the bands payouts to take the majority of payout for themselves for the reunion both would have been great to include in a mockumentary. -

I thought it was a good episode but some of us knew the BJC was actually from north hampton, mass. At least they were when they originally appeared on SNL years ago with the smash hit "Massachusetts Afternoon". I was kindof mad that they changed the band's story from being from n hampton to being a chicago/socal band.
And the story of how they got their name when some studio guy said "who are you, the bluejean committee?" Seemed like a ripoff of how Motley Crue got their name which I think was under very similar circumstances. -

Unlike some of the previous episodes, this episode wasn't parodying any one specific documentary or band. As others have mentioned it was a little bit of The Eagles, a little bit of Chicago, the music sounded a little like Steely Dan, the only releasing one album thing was a little reminiscent of Willis Alan Ramsey etc etc.
I like that they're not completely bound by the concept of parodying specific documentaries. It's just as fun when they just make something up.
