Robert Eggers really captures reality and allows the audience to susped disbelief with once simple trick:
Not filling European period pieces with black people

It's not racism, it's simple fact. The OP's remark is absolutely correct, and also very pertinent given Hollywood tendencies.
Generally speaking, no one in Europe at large had ever seen a black man before the XV/XVI century, until Portugal and other countries began bringing a few of the African slaves to Europe for menial housekeeping tasks on rich people's (nobility) residences (the equivalent of North American "house negroes").
Long after that, well into the XIX century, many Europeans still hadn't laid eyes on one. There just weren't enough of them around to, and the ones that were certainly wouldn't be roaming around freely as regular citizens, having jobs of importance or any sort of active participation in mainstream society.
Hollywood loves re-writing history to conform to modern notions of PC crap and lead entire generations into completely false notions, but that doesn't make it real, and you shouldn't confuse one thing with another.
P. S. - Please jump off a tall building and die. Thank you.
