Well there used to be a bus station right across the road from it Bobby and so it was always filled with drivers who had just come off shift and people waiting for their connecting buses to take them to their next port of call.
It was a bit of a rumbustious place with lots of differing types of person frequenting it for various reasons. Flotsam and jetsam, driftwood and treasure chests. It was the only place in the area for around half a mile in any direction.
Now the bus station has moved, it's new houses where it used to be and the area has more cafes and eateries (And art galleries and a gurdwara) now and is one of those places you might call getting
gentrified
. There's plenty of alternatives to go to.
The appeal of the Star Bar was that it has the last bastion of what that part of town was. The gateway between the Gorbals and Govanhill. The new sign and the new prices mean it is just another in a list of many new outlets in the area and the name is all it holds onto.
A shame in some regards but also a sign of progress in others.
I used to live across the road from it. Had a girl who I'd threaten to take on a dinner date there if she argued with me. Like many here it's always been a bit of a landmark when crossing that part of the city.
But the youth will visit now that Gary's spoke about it again. Compare and contrast and write home about it. Perhaps it will find a new life for another set of generations and live into the time when flying cars will free up the roads around it -

Well that is very interesting!
I enjoy hearing about the history of certain places. They should make more of a fuss about all of that within the bar itself with photos etc for the tourists. The gentrified folks love all of that type of stuff.
Well I have been watching the video and Gary seems very happy indeed with it all once again. He loves The Star Bar. He just can’t stop smiling from ear to ear AND he says that he is going to visit once a year now for a yearly pilgrimage!
It’s just good to see him so happy because I know he hasn’t had it easy and if The Star Bar has done that for him then that is wonderful!

Gary might be that last hope they are needing there Bobby, there's quite a lot of choice just a 5 minute walk from the Star Bar now and lots of people are trying them out as they are closer to transport connections.
Who knows, the yearly visit might be a pilgrimage for Gary fans to get in on the action themselves and end up like the Rocky Horror Picture Show -

Ha ha wouldn’t that be funny!
Speaking of posh areas, myself and Clare took a resident out to Hebden Bridge the other day. Oh you should have seen Clare making such a fuss over how ‘posh’ she found it and how out of place she felt.
She said that I fit in though because of my flat cap and ‘posh accent’.

She only goes for rough and ready types who end up in jail. All of her exes are in jail and her father and brothers also spend or have spent a lot of time in jail. She’s a rough one!

Oh I wouldn’t touch it! Don’t worry on that one!
She has a lot of funny old ideas does Clare. She thinks that shop fronts should all be a uniformed brown colour with simple plain text telling you what the shop is. She says that all of the different colours and fancy font ‘does her head in’.

Sounds like she might have some sort of visual processing irritation Bobby. Does she have a favourite brown and a favourite font that works with it?
In a world filled with crass colours and shapes all vying for attention it can make some people feel uneasy
I'm not sure if there are solutions to these problems yet, but I'm sure she's not alone -

I think that she just wants them to all be one colour with nice simple font for all of them. She won’t like it in Balamory.
Have you asked her about things like Gap or Apple, how does she feel about Ikea and Google?
Minimalistic calm aesthetics are appealing in their own way, even the bolder ones like Ikea and Google. But the brown makes me think that there's a muted element to brightness which she's looking for.

No she doesn’t but she does have about 100 pairs of reading glasses because she keeps on losing them.
She actually grew up on the same estate where Ian Brady and Myra Hindly lived AND she’s related in some way to Harold Shipman would you believe!
I wonder if she knows Benny as I think he’s from that neck of the woods.
