There were black emperors, one was named septimius severus. So it’s technically possible. His father was African and mother Italian and he was the first non-fully Italian emperor.
Actually Macrinus, whom Denzel Washington plays in this, was also an emperor and was black as the night, baby.
This makes sense given how militaristic Roman culture was. Also, how large the empire and by extension to geographic coverage its military had. So you’d get a lot of emperors hailing from the Roman military and increasingly form the periphery of the empire, e.g. Africa.
I have a feeling, though, there’s a reason they chose to include him, though. Woke woke woke baby. Just hope we don’t see his heir is like a trans female tl male but you know they’ll insert that gay **** in there. Fuck.

Guys, ancient Rome was extremely ethnically diverse. Additionally, there would have been way more dark-skinned people than pale Irish people (probably none?) populating the city at this time. What's actually a lot more unlikely than Denzel Washington are all of the northern European and far western European white people acting in this film.
The Roman relationship to homosexuality and gender fluidity was also very, very different from our modern day relationship to it. Remember this was before the widespread doctrine of Christianity in this region so there was not the same kind of fear and aversion to sexuality (of course Rome had its own rules and relationships to what was acceptable sexually). I would be more surprised at zero depictions of non-hetero romance in Rome.
I get the whole woke movement is frustrating. For me it's frustrating solely and specifically for how transparent it often feels that the reason certain people get certain roles is to fulfill a quota or the way certain story lines get forced into a story. In that sense it can ruin the flow of storytelling and feel pretty ham-fisted.
But otherwise I don't really get why people get THIS angry over it. Why is it such a threat? It should be a mild frustration rather than a full-fledged movement? -

The fact that people have a problem with Denzel Washington's role in this is absolutely laughable.
What a complete joke they are with their "Woke Derangement Syndrome".

Nope, I have no issue with Denzel's role considering Septimius Severus was a black emperor of Rome.
If they historically portray blacks in a role when there were no blacks there to begin with (Hey Jennifer Garner do you hear me there were NO black women on the Rockford Peaches that commercial is bullshit) then I have issue with it.
