I agree with what Supa Soulja said. Yes, on the short run, it'll have drawbacks. Regardless of approach, mass shootings won't end overnight. Sometimes you have to solve things 1 centimeter at a time, rather than a step.

The fact that so many people have guns makes it difficult to outlaw them, you couldn't get rid of them all.
That said, there should be stricter laws in place when it comes to obtaining and keeping a gun. Australia has fairly strict gun laws and we very rarely have gun-related crimes (notice I said rarely and not never, but less is better than more).
Putting more restrictions on access to guns would lead to less gun crimes. Sure, Australia still has violent crimes with other weapons, but guns make committing such crimes a lot easier. You can fire off into a crowd, you don't even need to be standing near someone. It's quicker and easier to harm and kill multiple people.
I don't think there's been an Australian school shooting in my lifetime. The only notable mass-shooting in Australia that I know has happened in my lifetime happened in Tasmania when I was a year old in 1996. Some people barely even consider that Australia. -

Sadly, one day they'll learn the hard way why guns have always been considered a fundamental right.
Thinking that outlawing guns will stop people getting shot by criminals has got to be a sign of insanity.

I'm not sure the gun debate is necessarily split along political ideology lines, is it? I know Dems who recognize the importance of guns.
I think that's why no party will ever make a serious attempt to outlaw them.
