I don't so much care about any racial implications. It's official. It's about safety. I don't like ignorance and cutesiness. Just get to the point. Give the speed limit and caution to slow down, but don't make subjective judgments about saving lives because that's not the point. Keep traffic signs simple.

β 5 years ago(July 10, 2020 05:38 PM)βThe safety of all lives matterβ doesnβt make any sense because the subject of the sentence is βsafetyβ, therefore βMatterβ must be pluralized. You wouldnβt say , βsafety matterβ, because β safety mattersβ is correct. What is confusing about that? This has been explained about three times now in this thread.
The person who made the sign either did that on purpose to send a political message or sucks at writing. Either way itβs an indictment on the person and whoever is responsible for checking an electronic road sign before itβs deployed.

I concede.
I was approaching this on "lives matter" but I concede your point. Your explanation made sense and eplained in a way that I was apparently missing.
Thank you for that. That's all I ask for: dialogue. Sometimes things, even obvious, can genuinely escape me, and an explanation is all that's required. Thank you Erica.
As to the rest, look at the sign. Where would the "s" go? The sign barely fits the letters it does. I see this as trying to fit as many letters as possible within the allotment. I've seen some weirdly worded signs because of that.
Also as far as things being eplained to me three times, please remember that when I have explained things three times, and they still get twisted around.
Would this sign be as offensive it read: black lives as opposed to all lives? Again, this is a sincere question, because as a town trying to protect their citizen, and as one who genuinely doesn't see the problem with the sign, the mentioning of all lives on the sign is an all inclusive way to mention all citizens.
I believe all can coexist without detracting from the message from the other, and I don't see this as an "either/or" type of situation. I don't see one message taking away the power from another, and for that reason, do not understand why this simple street sign should have to cause such anger when there are more important things to get angry about.

Lilith,
it's grammatically incorrect. It should be the "Safety of All Lives Matters".
For that reason alone it should be changed. To begin with though, it's a rather silly sign. Just get to the point.
It reads "THE SAFETY OF ALL LIVES MATTER"
To read it with an "S" would be incorrect. It's without an "s" at the end when referring the plural. Dogs matter. Plants matter. People matter. One would not say "all peoples matters" right?
People are this up in arms when the phrase "all" is inclusive of all citizens in the town that the speed limit is trying to protect? How is that not inclusive?
I appreciate that people are willing to talk about this with me, whether they see what I'm trying to question, or whether they're arguing with me. That's the point of debate and discussion. Not to slam doors.

β 5 years ago(July 10, 2020 05:44 PM)You donβt understand subject verb agreement.
The subject of the sentence on the sign is βsafety.β Safety matters. In what universe is βsafety matterβ correct?

Lilith, "of All Lives" is a prepositional phrase. The verb goes with "Safety". It's singular "Matters". "The safety of dogs MATTERS".
I don't hate over disagreement. I respect you and understand where you're coming from. But overall I don't think traffic signs should express anything other than the rules "SLOW DOWN", "CAUTION".
"WE CARE ABOUT YOUR SAFETY" is bullshit and should never be on a traffic sign.

My state has signs about that posted along towns and highways, especially since COVID, often discussing safety and reminding us to be cautious and mentioning safety and being aware of others.
Maybe it's a Yankee thing?

Sure, a sign about COVID is different. I'm just saying traffic signs need to be direct and to the point. They can't be too long and vague about intent or controversial. They should be purely instructional.

You know, now because I bring up a non-PC question for discussion, I'm going to forever have a target on my back with an disingenuous and erroneous label. Goes to prove: Don't ask questions.

Don't worry about it. Vlad, Russell and others are ALM. Erica and the liberals are BLM. I'm kind of in the middle. I like posters to be passionate and have ardent debates.

I'm in the middle as well but somehow people skip over the times I defend the BLM side or the middle. Or when I simply ask a question about inclusion, that'll get twisted.
What I don't appreciate is people rushing to immediate judgment when someone simply asks questions, or isn't radical in one direction or the other.

More oppression from the totalitarian Radical Left. These assholes will never run out of things to be offended by. And it's because they hate this country and want to destroy it.

That's what I'd think, and it's just one damn road sign. It's three words as part of a longer phrase.
My question remains: Are we to suggest that moving forward, those three words cannot be placed together, that somehow they will forever be, for lack of a better word, patented, and simply verboten. They're just words, and in this one simple case, on a street sign, of caution, trying to protect people.
In my case, I'm accused of trying to troll or feigning innocence, which the truth is I just don't see evil intent everywhere I turn or maliciousness at every corner behind every word. Sometimes, words are just words.

Personally, I think that the sign should get completely reworded. At the same time though, I donβt see where the outrage is coming from. Itβs just a missing letter, lol.
