to the alternatives. The objective or possesive is

He may have been intelligent at one point, though I doubt it. But that doesn't amount to a hill of beans, because
he's senile now,
and shouldn't be running for President.
My late mother was also very intelligent at one point. But after she contracted Alzheimer's, I would not have considered having her run for an elected office.

I know the experience. My mother had dementia for the last seven years of her life and I was with her for the last four. She had a friend in the attic and often expected the president to land his plane (not helicopter) in our driveway.
