In this day and age, why do cops have the capability to turn their body cams off? Why aren't they controlled from some type of central agency, and be allowed to turn off only when they use the head, and lunch break perhaps. Some degree of privacy to a degree is fine.
But as like as they are on the clock and on duty, why would there ever be any reason to turn their body cams off, especially when they're apprehending someone? Perhaps putting the control of body cams, both video an audio, and taking away their ability to self regulate, and have the images monitored by an independent source β wouldn't that help to maintain some sense of accountability that seems to keep getting clouded?

More and more cops are being issued body cams every day. In some cases, there could be issues with storage capability so they may turn them off while nothing is happening and forget to turn them back on when going on a call. I'm on another forum and I'll ask because a few cops post there.

Very little in the way of meaty responses so far.
IMOβ¦if an LEO is involved in an "incident", and the cameras are offβ¦instant desk job. It has become that important of a tool out on the streetβ¦. so no excuses.
One argument I heard was privacy concerns.
Body cam footage is technically public property, and is subject to Freedom of Information requests.
Forget where, but a while ago some anti-cop group requested all body cam footage from every officer for a period of several weeks. The hours required to redact personal info to protect innocent folks made the request unreasonable.
Gotta be some rule changes to insure body cam footage is not misused.
Think about how long it takes to scroll thru your occasional phone pict's
now multiply that time 24hr/day x # of cops on any given force.
Because β¦ police UNIONS.

Itβs required for a police officer to keep their body camera on in Chicago now:

This method appears to be working.

These days, there's practically a camera on every street corner. Personally, I wouldn't want to be a cop if my every move were watched. If this were expected from employees in every line of work, no one would be interested in employment.
