There are two reasons:
- The Dems want to hold the trial closer to the election in 2020 to magnify its impact.
- The Dems need to campaign for the Senate primaries in 2020.

Because if Trump wins the presidency again, he could still end up losing the Senate. Republicans have a lot of tough elections they are facing. If Democrats take the Senate back, it's goodbye Trump, hello Hillary.
