But an 'ism' implies an institutionalized system.

If it's only some dumbfuck black guy's opinion like "I hate whitey" that's not racism because we white fools don't give a **** about it. Black people have no power to do anything about it.

This explains it:
Now, let’s not confuse racism with prejudice. Prejudice is the belief that a person or a group of people are less than because of who they are. In other words, if a black woman tells you not to bring your bland, raisin-infused potato salad to the cookout because “white folks think salt is the best way to season food,” she’s not being racist. She’s displaying prejudice against you and people like you (and against your potato salad).
Black people can be prejudiced as hell, just like any other group of people. As a matter of fact, I think all humans are prejudiced in one way or another. But just because a black person hurt your feelings that one time doesn’t mean you’ve experienced racism.
This is where I’m going to lose some of you: I don’t believe that people of color can be racist in America.
Racism is completely different from prejudice, because it’s systemic, as the -ism suffix connotes. I’d define racism as a political, economic or social system in which a dominant race uses its power to oppress others of different races. And because I know people will pull a hamstring running to look up a dictionary definition of racism, I’ll link to one here. (It’s not far off from mine.)

That’s the same thing you said before except it’s worded differently. This is one guy’s opinion and it’s wrong
I addressed both the “ism” in racism and the fact that “systemic racism” is just an example of racism, not the only form.
He even used the words “I believe” which is a telltale sign that he knows what he’s saying isn’t the truth.
A cool dude once said “belief is not wanting to know what is true.”
Stupid huffpost.
Anyway, I understand your argument completely. It’s just wrong. -

I often wonder about the ultimate point behind the push for a shift in definition. When this discussion comes up I'm often reminded of the "assault rifle" conversation. Whatever the definition may be, I feel safe assuming we all generally know what people are talking about when they use the phrase.
In this case, I feel like most people know that when the layperson speaks of racism, they're referring to "race-based bigotry or prejudice" which falls under a wide variety of behavior. Otherwise, they would speak of "institutional race-based economic oppression" which seems it would make the inevitable "racist" remark a bit more murky.
Whenever the glazed over question and answer "can minorities be bigoted? Yes" comes up, I tend to do a full stop and wonder why so many people are so much more invested with the back and forth mudslinging over a definition rather than the thing that I
thought
was being referred to all along; bigotry.
But I think we've already reached a point where people consider bigotry to be okay and even justifiable in certain forms and against certain people. I've seen the "punching down" concept mentioned more than once.
Very interesting convo, nonetheless. I miss this kind of stuff and enjoy reading everyone's thoughts.

Thanks so much. I agree, and I think sometimes people tend to complicate things for the sake of antagonism, even if subtle. Not saying that's always the case. When it comes to race and society, of course things are very complex.
Btw, I love your sig line. Incredible movie.

He does the same thing with Christianity. He tries to tell me what the true meaning and doctrine of Christianity is cause he took a few religion and philosophy classes at the Prison he was sentenced to.
But he knows nothing about Christianity because he is not of the
spirit.
All Gameboy did was read textbooks on Christianity that were written by Atheists. Taught in a classroom by a liberal Jew who renounced his own faith[Judiasm] let alone Christianity.
Then we he got out prison he Became a Neo Nazi and when that didn't work for him he became a Satanist.
So Gameboy is a completely lost soul.

What a stupid ****ing statement. You have no idea, you're just spouting bullshit.

Blacks can't be racist against whites.
I disagree with you on a lot of things, but I've always thought you made well thought out arguments and were a rational thinker. That abomination of a statement you just made killed all of that.

Hey tardface. Racism is only possible with the oppression of one race over another, as has been the case with whites over browns and blacks for hundreds of years. A black person can discriminate against a white person, but they cannot be racist. That is the privilege of those in power who oppress other races as white people have done to ethnic minorities for hundreds of years. Questions?

That is only true if you completely change the definition of the word. Idiot.
