It's a good option for kids and teens as they're excited to get expandable money they could use for going out with friends on the weekends and such. It's okay from parents to their college-aged kids too as they could use the money (although I think gift cards, such as for good and gas would be more appropriate).
Giving a gift should convey thought. It's not what the item costs, it's the thought. There's no thought in giving someone cash.- Adults can already buy anything they want. They're not bound by their parents rules anymore. They have careers and credits cards. Giving them $50 or $100 or $200 in cash isn't going to change their net worth and isn't going to make them buy something they've always wanted. They would have already purchased it. What adults are interested in is the thought behind the gift.
For example, if a couple is celebrating their 5th wedding anniversary, he surprises her with jeans that she had her eyes on during a trip to Barbados the year prior and regretted not buying. There's thought in that.
I know a husband who gave his wife $100 for an anniversary and said "buy yourself something nice." This is odd to me - if they're married, the money they have is both of theirs anyway. So what is he doing giving her money when she has a debit card with access to the same bank account he has? That doesn't make sense. I sense a controlling marriage there. - It's counter-productive: If someone gives you $100 cash for Christmas, and, you also give them $100 cash, you two just cancelled each other out! But if you had given one another very different gifts that cost around the same price, that works out great. Now it could be if someone gives you cash, they're not expecting to get the same in return, so it's patronizing, they're subtly implying you could use the money and they're doing better financially than you are. This thought process only works if it's from the owner of a business to his employees, but otherwise from two equals, condescending.
