John Oliver ripped Dumb Donald a new one (again)

In part because I don't really have any other choice, I'm making a sincere effort to view Mr. Trump's presidency in a positive light, trusting in the system of checks and balances (and states' rights) to minimize any downside risks. The entrenched D.C. bureaucracy could use a good shaking up, but the resulting uncertainty is a bit disconcerting.
So it goes. -

Why is staying up at night freeloading?
Why cant you watch a tv show in the evening, get to bed in good time and then go to work?
Why do you think I don't work? I do.

And again
Here's the thing: We don't care.
We don't watch those shows.
Don't watch Bill Maher.
Don't watch John Oliver.
or The View, or Oprah, or SNL or any show featuring liberal slapheads grumbling about how Trump kicked their arses.
We don't care what "celebrities" think about anything. Their opinions just aren't relevant.
I don't know why liberals are so enamored with the asstarded opinions of celebrities.
Same with "Award Shows" - I don't watch them. Never did.
Millions of people do watch them, I just don't see the attraction - the cult of celebrity doesn't impress me. -

That's a real difference.
The people you loathe so much, you know, Libs, they actually tend to regularly watch Fox, Alex Jones and read Breitbart. Because it's smart to know what is said on the other side. It's makes one's opinion better informed.
But guys like you are proud of your ignorance. You think it makes you better. But it's actually the other way around.
Comedians and satirists will never reach people like you. You're not important in that regard. It's about the ones in the middle. The ones who decide elections. They tend to be more curious than the slackjawed, unquestioning ones, like yourself. If Trump keeps his crap up, which he will, this is going to be a hell of a crappy tenure.

for all john's huffing and puffing, he is consistently wrong and/or on the wrong side of just about everything he rails against. it's funny to watch him politically grandstand and consistently fail. I actually really liked his hbo show a lot when it first started out but then when it became clear that it had moved beyond the realm of satire in to partisan hackery, we stopped watching it.
the thing about guys like oliver who use a massive platform like an hbo comedy news satire program is that they can never just be satisfied just doing satire. they always let their personal politics seep in and then start presenting comedy as actual news. so the dumb people watching, who are not able to discern between a credible news program and a comedian making a half-baked sarcastic news program think they actually are getting valid news there. which is sad and scary but it's reality these days and one that you better believe oliver is fully aware of an is exploiting. it's exactly what the daily show was as well. I doubt anyone watches that show anymore though with that terrible new host.

As funny as John Oliver is,
there is one thing he doesn't understand:
All his effort is useless.
DT and his crew are FACT-PROOF and so are their public.
And why doesn't DT care?
Because he uses the
Thomas-theorem
to make self-fulfilling prophecies
If men define situations as real, they are real in their consequences.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_theorem
This means: once there is a critical mass of people who are not consuming classical media any more and listen to the Bannons and Trumps only there will be a certain effect:
Let's take the unemployment rate, let's assume DT states the unemployment rate is 30% and repeats this again and again
people will FEEL that this is actually is the case
and begin to ACT like this situation would have been true.
Puppets to a master.
Democracy's going downhill
and no comedian can change something about that.
It's so good this board closes so I can cry safely in my home
without getting touched by all this idiocracy any more. -

I agree with that.

Nothing says 'unbiased' like perpetually dependent parasites
Sure, but You have to build up structures that are independent of the contemporary government. The experience in countries that have such structures are- yes, it's difficult to keep those structures without corruption
BUT - media situation as a whole is not going complete havoc there like it's the case in the U.S.A.

At least the USA has a sizeable opposition media.
The "opposition" to the leftist media in Europe isfar left papers. There's not a single right wing media in my country. Germany doesn't appear to be much different.

You have to be
very
far right to get this experience. (but I knew that in Your case) . May I ask which Country?

No, just legitimately right. Even the very light right variant ala Fox News is completely absent. There are no major far right publications in the West that I have heard of, but plenty of far left.
Norwegen.

Perhaps, but the fact remains that all the major publications are leftist. That's a massively skewed balance. -

The F.A.Z. and Cicero are quite intelligent and very conservative - but they would rather shut up forever than taking the point of view of neo-Nazis. And in the case of the F.A.Z. sometimes You also get other views as well. (for example it's the only print magazine where Constanze Kurz writes on a regulary Level) There are enough German speaking websites filling the printed-neo-nazi-stuff-gap (which I won't promote here). More to Your liking will probably be the Swiss Magazine "Die Weltwoche" , it's strongly connected with the SVP.
Problem is: the more You go to the right, the more they are ready to distort reality for their usage.

this event never happened (details explained in the article). BILD corrected itself (they do it rarely), did the others do as well?
