Life initially had no purpose. There is no higher power out there that decided to create us. Earth simply reached a point where life became sustainable, cells then developed and evolved billions of times throughout time, and now here we all are. Of course, that's really just to explain why we exist as a species. For why each individual is currently alive is entirely up to those individuals. Who gets to be rich shouldn't really be a factor in your decision for what your life's purpose is.
