Question about forgiveness.

Just so we're square here, Matthew writes this story 40 years after the fact. He supposedly hears it from Peter, who is in his 60s at the earliest. We have an old story, told by an old man, in times long before modern medicine, translated into Greek, then Latin, then English.

When Peter asked if he should forgive a brother who sins against him up to seven times, Jesus replied, "I do not say to you, up to seven times, but seventy-seven times."
As someone who was there, and heard it firsthand, it was actually "Doot Doot (6 7)" and was in reference to the answer to life, the universe and everything -

Itβs not a literal number, itβs an expression that means you should always forgive, repeatedly. When we allow scripture to interpret scripture, the proper reading is 70 x 7 that does not literally mean 490 times, but rather refers to continually, without limit.
