Cemeteries - About the Graves of prominent Personalities
Whether the Père-Lachaise in Paris or the Central Cemetery in Vienna:
Graves of deceased celebrities such as Jim Morrison, Udo Jürgens and Falco attract numerous visitors.
But what's the appeal of it?
Père-Lachaise is the largest cemetery in Paris with countless graves of well-known personalities.

Why do people want to see the graves of celebrities, most of whom they've never met in person?
Are people making pilgrimages to celebrity graves like others go to pilgrimage sites?
And to what extent are the deceased idols something like substitute saints?
The relationship between fans and stars is a very special one.
The star is often unreachable, but a person that fans believe they know.
The formation of legends often begins after death, when the star is removed from life and thus from access.
Some people may see it the other way around.
A permanent grave site could enable
"access"
and (supposed) proximity.
After all, dead people cannot run away.
For me, the appeal lies more in the cemeteries as a whole.
In their differences and special features, their small streets and large avenues.
Cemeteries are even better parks and a little handshake with history.

Really looks like they cleaned up James's by removing the graffiti on it and near it.
Much nicer.
I've also seen pics with a bust of him on it.
I always thought it was part of it but I guess it was unofficially put there.
I would like to have that pinwheel for my bike.

Well that sucks and that is just wrong.
Doing a little more digging, ha!, I found this out about the bust.
In 1981, Croatian sculptor Mladen Mikulin placed a bust of Morrison and a new gravestone with “Jim Morrison”
to commemorate the 10th anniversary of his death; the bust was defaced through the years by cemetery vandals and later stolen in 1988.

Dolphin produced a series of six works based on the bust produced by a fan, left on Jim Morrison’s grave at Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris. The works describe the progressive deterioration of the work each year, as the object was damaged by fan graffiti, which covered not only Morrison’s monument but also adjacent tombs. The bust itself gradually became considered part of the site, as people chipped parts of it off to keep and ultimately the item was stolen by 1987.

But as well as I understand it, the bust reproductions aren't on Morrison's grave since 1988 either. -

Graves are for us more than for the people that are in them, to look at and consider where they might be. So it is fitting that celebrities should have creative graves, there is nothing wrong with that.

You may not find King's graves in the USA.
But there's an impressive old cemetery with an even more impressive church in VA.
The church has beautiful Tiffany windows!
What touched me the most was the story of someone's aunt.
She wasn't allowed to be buried next to the love of her life, even though she lived with him for decades. Just because she was black and he was white. Both are buried there in the cemetery, in different areas.

Wow!! Nice! I didn’t know about this cemetery. I never lived in VA, just drove through. I thought only New Orleans had the cool graves!
The US has some beautiful Catholic churches.
Had Lincoln not been killed racism probably would have been eradicated! VA was the main slave trading area with monuments celebrating the fact. Racism in the South and Mid-Atlantic still is pretty strong.

And that's exactly what fascinates me about cemeteries.
The graves show so much about the people and their sometimes dramatic lives.
Children who died long before their parents.
Or entire families at almost the same time (epidemics?).

Yep, I've answered the question for myself long ago.
It's still strange to me when fans kiss gravestones from top to bottom.
Or hold strange cemetery ceremonies, preferably around midnight.
