This is around the time Persephone must cross the river Styx and return to Hades per contractual agreement.
As a result the flowers will wilt and die and fall to the ground, the trees will be bare and a brisk cold will envelop everything.
It's Persephone's sorrow manifested in tangible ecological change. Lovely how the Greeks had an anecdote for every phenomenon.
