LOL….Yes, but I still got to see, and keep, some classic movies, that would have been lost to me forever…And I still have a VCR and tapes! Antiques almost!

yes finally someone understands me and finally someone has discernment and class about movie watching formats. i love that you still love vhs tapes and vcrs i will never and can never part with my vhs tapes or my vcr. they are a part of my childhood thus if i get rid of either of them i will lose a big part of my childhood this is very special to me. 2 of the most special things that i own are my vcr and my vhs tape movies.
why would these movies be lost forever to you if you didn't have them on vhs tape? is it because you can't get them on a streaming site or on on demand?

Some movies you just want to keep in your home, as a physical presence.

hopefully we can be personal to each other again through this conversation of shared experiences. so it's just for nostalgic value and importance keeping your vhs taps movies and your vcr?
do you also think and feel that by getting rid of your vhs tapes from you childhood that you would lose an important and essential part of your childhood?

Yes. I'm sure they have no monetary value, but I value them as a kind of diary of my life.

so did you record things on vhs tapes from your tv growing up in new zealand in the '90s? if so, what kinds of things have you recorded onto a vhs tape?

I recorded heaps of movies off the TV. Hundreds! Most of those have gone now though. I kept a few of the best ones, but most of my tapes are store bought movies.

I used to do that also. It was one of my favorite things. I also would bind the tapes it if ever broke. I did that with cassette tapes as well.

interesting how even in new zealand life is the same as it is here in the us as far as movie watching and collecting in your home.
do you remember the horror show called this is horror from 1990? i recorded it on a vhs tape and it is the best show about horror movies that has ever been made. i wish i could find the episode i lost somewhere.
it had interviews with horror movie directors on the set of their movies and also had behind the scenes videos where you'd see the making of a horror movie from the perspective of someone who happened to be on the set while they were filming the horror movie.
and they even showed a special effect with rachel talalay as she worked on the special effects in the movie a nightmare on elm street part 4: the dream master.
one of the coolest interviews was sam raimi on the set of evil dead 2 and him standing outside his cabin in this film and talking about being influenced by the last house on the left.
also they had really cool weird unique and creepy music they played while showing a weird clip from an obscure horror movie.

I don't remember that show, but NZ was always behind in its TV, and some things we didn't get at all.

doesn't it sound like the ultimate and best show about horror movies ever made? don't you think peter jackson would consider it the best show about horror movies ever made?

Peter Jackson made a couple of good horrors himself, but I don't know what he'd think about the one you mentioned.

It's an outmoded and inferior format.
You've seen Guy Standeven in something because the man was in everything.

Sadly it'll never make a reassurance like vinyl because of the quality, but for me that's exactly why I keep going back to it. I'm sad that the younger folks will never experience not knowing what's happening on the screen because the image is so degraded, or missing chunks of a spaceship because the dark colors are so crushed.
Even if VHS does have a bit of a comeback it won't be the same thing. My experience of Star Wars for the longest time was a VHS recording of a CBC broadcast, and I couldn't make-out half of what was going on! But this was my only way to watch Star Wars so I had to fill in the blanks and make it up in my head! When I actually saw a legitimate copy of the film it lost some of the magic.
I have a decent sized VHS collection and my hope is that I can convince my friends to allow their kids to only watch VHS' …but I think they will say no 😝

i still have hope vhs tapes and vcrs will come back i mean if they can bring back vinyl and turntables and cassette tapes and cassette decks then they can bring back vhs tapes and vcrs.
how did it lose some of the magic star wars when you watched it and saw everything?
