YES, yes he absolutely did. I found the friendship they developed prior to filming was incredible. How casual Depp was with regards to how they just "blew **** up" for the fun of it.
I can only imagine the tales, but to be a fly on the wall.

I love Fear and Loathing, and I've been meaning to read more of his stuff for a long time. Unfortunately, a good deal of his topics are before my time so I don't understand a lot of the less direct political and social references, but it's just his style. It flows in a very cynical, conversational fashion that I really got into in F&L. I'm not acquainted with his other work, however, so I can't really speak much beyond my own impressions.

Do you remember any references you didn't quite understand? I'm curious, and I could probably help you out. In order for me to appreciate Mort Sahl, I had to learn about all the powerful people, the language, what was happening with the rest of the world, but I took that as another gift of learning.

Well, just as a for instance, take this memorable passage;
“We are all wired into a survival trip now. No more of the speed that fueled that 60's. That was the fatal flaw in Tim Leary's trip. He crashed around America selling "consciousness expansion" without ever giving a thought to the grim meat-hook realities that were lying in wait for all the people who took him seriously… All those pathetically eager acid freaks who thought they could buy Peace and Understanding for three bucks a hit. But their loss and failure is ours too. What Leary took down with him was the central illusion of a whole life-style that he helped create…"
In this case, I had to look up who Tim Leary was and how he was connected to the 60s counter-culture that was mentioned here and there throughout the novel. Things like that; Thompson's own musings on a time and place of which I have no knowledge. I do still read up on Thompson from time to time, when I remember the old nights watching the movie, reading F&L for the first time, feeling so taken in by the writing. I found him so inspiring at the time, which is why I would say I'm a fan despite not being terribly well-read of him.
