The first elective class I ever took in college was on influential black female writers. Thatβs how I got introduced to βBelovedβ and β The Bluest Eye,β two of Toni Morrisonβs most accclaimed works.
As for poets I grew up reading Langston Hughes, Paul Lawrence Dunbar , and Maya Angelou. What can be said about Maya Angelou? Sheβs written some of the most inspiring poems on female empowerment. βDoes my sexiness upset you?β If βStill I Riseβ was released in 2019 it would be in the caption of every womanβs Instagram posts and part of every social media profile.
Writers of all cultures and backgrounds must be celebrated.
