I don't know. Probably a fashion myth. The styles of clothing were all very similar. Women wore long gowns with petticoats, but casual fabrics like cotton were more widely available. Louis heels definitely were popular in the US colonies, especially in black or red.
I had a look at the MET Museum online collection of 18th century clothing of American origin. No robe Γ la franΓ§ais, but I did see examples of robe Γ l'anglaise and robe Γ la polonaise in different fabrics, including cotton and silk. There were multiple kinds of dresses that were popular back then.
