I can't do artificial sweeteners either. They either give me migraines or they make me sick. I use unsweetened, unflavoured whey protein powder. If I want chocolate, I'll just add cacao powder directly. The plain lets me make my own flavours as I go. I'll have to check and see which brand I've got in the kitchen now. But the one I use is grass-fed, organic, 5 ingredients. The type of protein, and source, really does matter, because as you said, it can take what would be a great smoothie and make it taste terrible if the wrong protein is added (or if too much is used). I also use unsweetened coconut milk or unsweetened coconut water for my smoothies.

Let me know which protein powder you use. I was just using bovine collagen but it’s not enough. I need gluten-free but whey doesn’t bother me. Plant-based products I have issues with. They have a lot of lead in them as well. I stay away from sugar as well. Thanks.

If you try it, let me know what you think of it and if it works for you. Problems I've had while trying to find the right protein include trying to find unflavoured, (it seems it's much easier to find vanilla, chocolate and strawberry than it is to find unflavoured), avoiding artificial sweeteners, (for all of the reasons we discussed), finding the right type and source of protein, (I've tried plant based as well as whey, but whey consistently is the best, but not all whey is created equally as you can end up with concentrate or isolate), not having a protein powder with lots of extra ingredients, and also getting horrible digestive and intestinal reactions. I've tried so many brands, I've sort of lost track!

I will let you know. I used to use Bucked Up protein and it’s made with sucralose which is probably not good for you either. After a while I decided I rather use Fage 0% fat yogurt as it’s unsweetened and high in protein. At this point I rather just eat salads and minimal fruit but I like smoothies now and again.

I love my smoothies because I get tons of energy after I have one. It's better than a cup of coffee! I always use a kale base, a mix of fresh and/or frozen fruit, ice if necessary, protein powder, I used to add collagen powder (also unflavoured). Once in a while I'd add a dollop of plain Fage yoghurt to thicken it up depending on the flavour I'm making. If I'm using light fruits like apples, pears, and using celery, I'll stick to coconut water, but if I use banana, cacao, oranges or raspberries, I'll use coconut milk.

It sounds like we do things very similarly. Green smoothies are my favorite. I don’t like overly sweet smoothies. A lot of protein powders are disgustingly sweet with Stevia or some kind of sweetener. The unsweetened way is the way to go. Thanks again.

Definitely! That's why I never got flavoured protein powders, not even vanilla. They overly sweeten everything. I don't even have a remote sweet tooth and I can't stand anything sweet, so I like to have the control. If I want sweet, usually the fruits I use are enough, or I can add a little bit of manuka honey or maple syrup. I know people like agave, but that doesn't work for me. Stevia is nasty. I've tried so many times to try and use that stuff, but yuck, I can't. To me, even in tiny amounts, it tastes very bitter.
Good luck with your protein powder smoothies!
I've got some good, fresh fruits and veggies (I just need to pick up more ginger root).

You have to really be one boring ass bitch to know the different types of pears.

Bartletts can get mushy if you don't eat them fast enough.
