Tetrodotoxin is the compound which produces such an effect in those circumstances Lilith
It's most commonly found in the livers of pufferfish (Although other aquatic species have it) which are plentiful around the Caribbean but are much more scare along the West African coast. East Africa has plenty of them though, which leads to interesting thoughts as to how such specific medical information passed among witchdoctors but kept exclusive from Europeans.
Harvesting the compound and then keeping it in usable powdered form is a complex and dangerous process. Something that would have attracted attention from those observing the actions of those capable of doing so.
Seems like there has always been an Illuminati or Slash dot of sorts keeping things interesting for those who only occasionally notice things which are different.
I don't think we'll ever get a proper understanding of oral traditions from before written documentation of events but there seemed to be plenty of information making its way across oceans and centuries which has been vital to our harnessing the power of nature
As for the poor woman in the OP. I think that would be an awful way to spend your last moments. I'm glad she got out and can have a few more better ones before her time comes.

Yep. I knew it was from the pufferfish. Using this powder has been around for ages.
I think they used this in Lord of Illusions. Might be another movie, can't recall, but it was also brought to cinema decades ago.

You pretended to be jacky on IMDb1 and made a post about her toe socks making her feet hot and smelly!
The only poster who made Steve Lake wet his pants 4 times without ever breaking a sweat each of those times.

"Exquisite Agony"! Yikes! What a way to describe this experience.
I haven't seen this movie yet. Those woods look very familiar. They remind me of the same woods that the "wolf-man" ran through (near the gypsy camp). Ray Milland is always worth a watch. EAP is a master storyteller, so I'll bet this is good adaptation. Have you watched it?
What a horrible way to go.

There were some places that would bury their dead with a string attached to their hand that led out of the coffin, out of the ground and to a bell so that if someone were buried and "woke up", they could ring the bell and be dug up. Long history of using bells for "dead" bodies.

True.
In some places there were actually people assigned to the graveyard at night to listen for the bells. Thus the origin of the phrase
"the graveyard shift."

No way.
Incinerator would suck but youβd last maybe a few minutes before the nerves burn off. Actually youβd probably suffocate to death
But buried alive in a coffin? Have fun starving to death or slowly dying of asphyxiation, breaking your fingers off after you go mad realizing the world has left you to die alone in the earth, surrounded by corpses, completely alone with nobody coming to help.
Stop.
