First we have to ask ourselves, what is the cause of America's (and the West's) obesity epidemic? It's not just overeating. There's too much comfort and idleness in our culture, e.g. most people prefer driving instead of walking to places. We call this "progress". Progress will be the death of us. The Romans were victims of their own progress. They became fat and idle over time too. The barbarians were primitive but proved to be stronger. History might repeat itself but insouciant Americans will be too burnt out on their junk food, prescription drugs, Netflix, video games and other luxuries to care or put up much of a fight. So it goes.

When I had a foreign exchange student from Germany who said she was 3/4 French, they all got fat except for ours, who was a vegetarian and played soccer, also a blonde with tan skin, a little shorter than me.
