You could probably throw in the Vietnam fiasco (the US support of French colonialism and the propping up of the Diem government. This would include (among numerous other scenarios) the My Lai massacre and Nixon's pardon of Lt. Calley.
However, as mentioned previously, all of this only begins to scratch the surface. -

I suppose "The Domino Theory," which suggested that if South Vietnam fell to communism, the other Southeast Asian countries, one by one, would follow.
There was the Gulf Of Tonkin Incident, which was later debunked as a scam, but it served to justify US escalation of troops in Vietnam. I'll copy and paste a short paragraph from the Britannica website on that
Gulf of Tonkin incident, complex naval event in the Gulf of Tonkin, off the coast of Vietnam, that occurred from August 2 to August 4, 1964, during the Vietnam War. It was described to the U.S. Congress on August 5, 1964, as two unprovoked attacks by North Vietnamese torpedo boats on the U.S. destroyers Maddox and Turner Joy. The Gulf of Tonkin incident led to the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, which allowed President Lyndon B. Johnson to greatly escalate U.S. military involvement in the war.
