I wouldn't be surprised to learn that many of these organic substances that are now known as illegal drugs were being used back then. I am too lazy to google, but peyote was being used in religious ceremonies for a long time and I bet that they had figured out psilocybin containing mushrooms. I remember reading in an inflight magazine about the theory behind the discovery of beer–the conjecture was that bread had been left out in the rain and fermentation occurred. I'd bet a lot of money that alcohol and prostitution were around in the 1500s.
