Fact: Virginia split in two as a result of the Civil War and Lee remained in charge of the Army of Northern Virginia even after West Virginia had been admitted to the Union.

He did give this as an excuse, yes, but actions always speak louder than words.
The western counties of Virginia were a part of the state from the colonial period onward and were not recognized as a separate state until June 20, 1863.
Yet Lee's very first action of the war in September of 1861 was to bring the war directly to (west) Virginians.
On top of being a traitor, he was also a liar. It's a shame he wasn't executed.

You have no appreciation for the South or the army he led or their absolute trust and faith in him as their commander.
You likewise have no understanding of his devotion to those troops.
You take none of this into account into your very black and white George Bush-like interpretation of the events that led to Lee fighting for the South instead of the North.
When war broke out, Lee's decision on which side he would fight hung on whether or not Virginia would secede.
Liberals start with a premise that backs up their actions. You want Lee to be this black hating slave loving anti-American traitor because that would justify your hatred of him.
I genuinely feel sad for you liberals at times. You do not really care about this country's history. All you care about is how to spin it to your advantage for political gain here today.
So Lee is a traitor. He must be vilified. All statues must be removed.

I'm well aware that the south idolizes losers and perpetually bitch and moan about how everything is always someone else's fault. That's why the majority of them are still on welfare to this day. They remain a drain on our resources and a hindrance to the country as a whole. The biggest mistake in our history was to allow them back in.
