Despite the rain, over 100 people gathered in Gernsbach on Friday evening to demonstrate
for the Hornisgrinde wolf – shortly before the ruling of the Administrative Court of Mannheim.

Administrative Court - Hornisgrinde Wolf may be Killed
The Administrative Court of Baden-Württemberg in Mannheim ruled in expedited proceedings on appeals from nature conservation associations. According to the ruling, the so-called Hornisgrinde Wolf may be shot immediately.
A Wolf.
The
Hornisgrinde Wolf
may be shot. The Administrative Court (VGH) declared the species protection exemption granted by the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of the Environment for the killing of the
Hornisgrinde Wolf
to be likely lawful and enforceable in two expedited proceedings. This dismisses the appeals by nature conservation associations against the decisions of the Stuttgart Administrative Court of February 05, 2026.
The wolf may therefore be killed with immediate effect until March 10, 2026.

This means that a so-called

Unfortunately, they still have a bit of time until March 10, 2026 (start of the closed season).

Shooting the Hornisgrinde Wolf could backfire in the Election Campaign
The dispute over the "
Hornisgrinde "Wolf"
long since became a political flashpoint in southwest Germany: Shooting permits, court rulings and election campaigns clash with growing wolf populations, low risks to humans and conflicting interests between farmers, hunters and conservationists. While Environment Minister Thekla Walker (Greens) is under pressure, hunting laws, lobbying influence and the acceptance of wolves in rural areas come into focus. According to a study, wolves are very popular.
Animal rights activists in the Black Forest are holding vigils.

European Court of Justice

Not least, some media outlets could lose even more trust. In the NINA study, 79% of respondents stated that the risks posed by wolves are exaggerated in the media. Animal rights activists announced, they'll take the case all the way to the European Court of Justice (ECJ), if necessary. They also call for a next vigil for the
Hornisgrinde Wolf
on Saturday at 18:00 p.m.
in the parking lot of the Hotel Sand in Bühl. So, the situation remains tense.

Discussion about Hornisgrinde Wolf
The Hornisgrinde wolf continues to generate headlines.
The permit to shoot him is valid until March 10, 2026.
The
Alternative Wolf and Bear Park
in Bad Rippoldsau-Schapbach currently receives numerous inquiries.
The park therefore will hold an information event on March 07, 2026.
The event will address the impact of human behaviour on wolves, among other things.
Afterwards, visitors will have the opportunity to observe wolves at dusk.
The idea behind the event is, to get to know native predators like wolves, as well as bears and lynxes, so that precisely this kind of misbehaviour by humans can be avoided.

Green Minister wants to shoot the Wolf
Demo for Wolf "Grindi"
When demos take place in Germany, they usually occur in market squares.
Sometimes about war, sometimes against extremism, sometimes for higher wages.
In the Black Forest, a protest movement forms far from any pedestrian zone.
In the middle of nowhere, among spruce and fir trees, it's not about high politics,
it's about
"Grindi"
.
More than 200 citizens at a demo against the planned shooting of wolf “Grindi”.
People now call him
"Grindi"
, this wolf with the official ID number GW2672m.
He roamed around since 2023 the 1,164-meter-high Black Forest peak of the Hornisgrinde, which gave him his nickname. And he doesn't just like people; he's also a bit vain. He repeatedly approached curious hikers and allowed them to photograph him. He didn't suspect that this would be his death sentence.
Thekla Walker (56), the Green Party's Environment Minister in Baden-Württemberg, said that his lack of fear is a danger. A secret team of hunters [
"removal team"
☻] is supposed to shoot him. That's met with fierce protest.
Demonstrators wear Headlamps
I, the BILD reporter, want to know who these people are, so I travel to the demo in the Black Forest on Saturday evening. The route leads through the national park, past lakes and forests. Somewhere here,
"Grindi"
roams around – and he has the hunters on his tail.
The demonstrators gather at the meeting point in the woods. No professional activists. People like you and me: Tradesmen, office workers, retirees. Many carry headlamps and flashlights. Their plan: to show their presence, patrol the national park and thus delay or prevent the shooting.
88-year-old Woman at the Vigil with a Rollator
Brigitte Graf (57, dental technician) from Karlsruhe is there with dog Nayumi (1) and says:
"I was already at a vigil for 'Grindi' in Bühl two weeks ago. I think that a wolf living in a national park shouldn't be shot."
Retiree Ursula Litterst (88) came to the demo with her rollator. She holds a sign with a wolf picture and the sentence:
"Please let me live."
She grumbles:
"I voted for the Greens since the party existed. Now that the Green state government decided to shoot Grindi, they won't get my vote anymore."
BILD reporter Robin Mühlebach (59) and Ursula Litterst (88) with her rollator
.
Jörg (61) and his wife Konstanze Zeltwanger (59) live near the national park. She says:
"We are hobby shepherds, and our sheep were never attacked by a wolf. We consider it a scandal that the wolf was included in hunting regulations."
In fact, Grindi isn't a bad wolf. He killed 9 sheep in the past four years; other wolves are considerably more bloodthirsty.
Biker is also present
Hubertus du Bois (57) from Offenburg wears the vest of his club
"Lobo MC"
. Lobo is Spanish for wolf. He is against shooting the wolf for the sake of honour.
"The wolf only showed himself to walkers with dogs because it was mating season and he was looking for a female to mate with."
As darkness falls, Michael Stadler (59, master hairdresser) and his wife Beatrice (52) put on their headlamps. They're going on patrol. Perhaps the light will drive Grindi away from the three hunters who are after him…
"It can't be that in the national park they talk so much about nature conservation and then try to push nature back in the form of a wolf,"
says Beatrice.
Bettina Vögele-Diebold & Anja Gester set off on their night patrol with companions.
Housewife Stefanie Braun (40) drove several hundred kilometers from the Rhineland with her children Noel (16) and Lara (13). They made large protest signs:
"Grindi has a Right to Life!"
After the vigil, Bettina Vögele-Diebold (65, pediatric nurse) and Anja Gester (64, geriatric nurse) put on bright vests. They switch on flashlights and headlamps and march along a hiking trail. Their mission: To walk through the night through the national park – in the hope that predator
"Grindi"
will be allowed to live.

"Grindi" will not be shot down - For now
Wolf friends can rejoice: Black Forest wolf Grindi will no longer be hunted.
Here's how Environment Minister Walker (Greens), who originally authorized the culling, explained the change of mind.
Many animal lovers across the country worried about Grindi's life for weeks.
The Administrative Court of Baden-Württemberg ruled weeks ago that the wolf could be shot until March 10, 2026. Now, the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of the Environment announced that the shooting permit will not be extended. This grants the wolf a new period of protection.
Ministry of the Environment: Data from Hornisgrinde Wolf to be used
The findings from the past few weeks concerning the Hornisgrinde wolf will be used to develop strategies for
"deterring the wolf outside of the mating season,"
the ministry stated in a press release. The wolf increasingly approached humans and sought contact with female dogs.
The Forest Research Institute (FVA) in Freiburg estimates that (based on experience) wolves will show less interest in female dogs once the mating season ends.
"We saw a significant decrease in reported sightings in February compared to the previous month,"
the ministry stated. Last year, this wasn't the case until mid-March. The decision is based on this data.
*
Experts: Wolf Behaviour will not change
Experts from the FVA believe that the wolf's behaviour will not change without human intervention. The Ministry of the Environment commissioned the FVA to develop strategies for deterring wolves.
"We aren't sitting idly by. We must closely monitor the situation,"
says Environment Minister Thekla Walker (Greens). She calls on the public for their cooperation.
"Please don't provoke any encounters with wolves and observe the behavioural guidelines posted throughout the region,"
the Environment Minister urges.
Sightings must be reported to the FVA in Freiburg.
Only with close monitoring do deterrent measures have a chance of success.
Consequences of new Federal Hunting Law for Baden-Württemberg
Regardless of the current exemption granted by the state Ministry of the Environment, the legal basis for hunting wolves will change in the coming weeks. The new Federal Hunting Law, which is scheduled to come into force by the beginning of April, stipulates that wolves will no longer be considered under nature conservation law but rather under hunting law. At the state level, this means that in future the Ministry of Agriculture (not the Ministry of the Environment) will be responsible for wolves and any permission for shooting them.
Before Agriculture Minister Peter Hauk (CDU) can grant such permits, a spokesperson for his ministry believes several legal questions still need to be clarified. For example, it's not yet clear what protection status wolves will enjoy in Baden-Württemberg in the future. They could be classified under the state's hunting and wildlife management law as protected species, thus potentially
imposing a year-round closed season for wolves
.

Sensational Observation
Wolf swims 1.5 km

Thanks to GPS: Surprising movement data of a wolf was secured in Switzerland.
Data from a swimming wolf was collected in Switzerland.
A wolf in Switzerland was fitted with a tracking collar in October of last year. Now experts analyzed the data. The findings are astonishing: During extensive wanderings across the country, the wolf M637 crossed Lake Lucerne, a distance of about 1.5 km. The movement data showed that he swam across the lake despite a temperature of 5° Celsius [41° F], instead of circumventing it.
Extensive Wanderings
Since being fitted with a transmitter, the wolf traversed Switzerland from the Vaud Jura to the Emmental region and the canton of Zug and back again. The data on his crossing of the lake (collected with the transmitter) is unprecedented in Switzerland and shows the distances wolves are capable of covering.

Verden (Lower Saxony) stops Wolf Killing after Court Ruling
Following several wolf attacks, the district issued a permit to kill a specific male wolf
– but now had to revoke it. The background.
A wolf.
The Verden district revoked the special permit it granted for the removal of a wolf in the municipality of Kirchlinteln in response to a ruling by the Stade Administrative Court on March 24, 2026 [
yesterday
]. The court reinstated the suspensive effect of an objection filed by an association.
"The permit is currently invalid, and the removal of the wolf is no longer permissible,"
the district administration emphasizes.
On March 18, the Verden district issued a nature conservation permit for the
"lethal removal"
— that is,
the shooting — of a specific male wolf, based on several wolf attacks, including some in the municipality of Kirchlinteln. The immediate enforcement of the permit was ordered.
"Following public reporting, an authorized association filed an objection with the Verden district against this decision and simultaneously applied to the Stade Administrative Court for the reinstatement of the suspensive effect of the objection,"
the district explains, outlining why the court took action.
Electric Fences too Low
The court essentially states in its reasoning that the environmental protection requirements for the exemption permit weren't met. Since the wolf is a protected species, higher court rulings stipulate that this exemption may only be granted if, for example, electric fences with a height of leastwise 120 centimeters, taut and flush with the ground, are in place.
"This necessary livestock protection wasn't present,"
the district office stated. Electric fences with only a maximum height of 105 centimeters were used.
The specific hunting behaviour of the male wolf and his family, as described by the Verden district and deduced from tracks in the affected animal enclosures, didn't lead to a different assessment of the legal situation, nor did the number of animals affected or the importance of sheep farming in the region. The court deemed the permit likely unlawful overall. The Verden district therefore revoked the disputed permit.
The Verden district administration stated that, under the currently applicable legal framework, it remains difficult to remove wolves from the wild. The district calls for the swift implementation of the measures already passed by the Bundestag (German Federal Parliament) to ease restrictions on wolf population control and the removal of problem wolves. The Bundesrat (Federal Council) is scheduled to make its decisions on these measures on March 27, 2026.
Wolf still not found
Last Friday, the Administrative Court in Stade and the Higher Administrative Court in Lüneburg rejected a so-called injunction on formal grounds, thus not suspending the permit's validity pending a decision on the urgent application. To date, the wolf wasn't found.
In the Verden district were more than 30 attacks since the wolf's reintroduction, resulting in the deaths of over 100 grazing animals. Just at the beginning of this month, 21 dead sheep, presumably victims of the predator, were discovered in the municipality of Kirchlinteln.
