I sometimes tell the real Juan Kerr about the boards Tara
He's holding on, his mind isn't what it used to be, but I think he's still got some fight in him yet
I know he would have asked "Which coast?" when speaking about orcas off the coast of Spain, but that's just him all over. Always a stickler for details.
I'm surprised that Scots are among the biggest hooligans in relation to orcas. In Scotland anyone who ventures out has nothing but respect for all mammalian life in the water.
But not many people venture out onto the water in Scotland unless it's in a ferry, so perhaps it's the alcohol, sunshine and easy to access day trips out in Spain which are really the problem
But, that's just Europeans for you!
Yah, the Scots row their ferries.
And the Scots are known for being silent teetotalers.
    Gute Nacht, Juanita! πŸŒ΅β€‹

                            Just checked…she died in 1971.

                            So it wasn't Shamu.
And orcas are trained, taught and guided by their mothers (matriarchy).

Orcas solely attacked humans when in captivity.
This young woman survived Shamu's attack back then.
A few months later Shamu died.
                              Who only blames Seaworld:
Don't go to whale or dolphin shows!
Don't watch movies with trained whales and dolphins!
In most areas these shows are already banned.

Orcas spotted hundreds of Miles from where they should be!
Orcas that have been terrorizing boats in southwest Europe since 2020 were recently spotted circling a vessel in Spain for the first time this year. The close encounter, which took place hundreds of miles from where the cetaceans should currently be, hints that this group is switching up its tactics β€” and scientists have no idea why.
Since 2020, individuals from this group have been approaching and occasionally attacking boats, sometimes causing serious damage to the vessels and even sinking them. The most recent sinking occurred on Oct. 31, 2023, but the orcas have sent at least three other boats to the bottom of the sea.
                                However,
no humans have been injured or killed.
                                ….
                                ….
So far, at least 16 different individuals have attacked boats. Eyewitnesses also claim to have seen orcas teaching other individuals how to attack boats, with an emphasis on attacking vessels' rudders to immobilize them.
There is also a suggestion that the behavior may have spread outside the population after a boat in Scotland was attacked by a different group in June 2023. It's impossible to prove this attack was connected to the others.
As the number of attacks has increased, boat owners have started using firecrackers and even guns to scare off the orcas, gCiencia reported. Scientists like LΓ³pez Fernandez have urged for restraint because the
                                subpopulation is
                                "in danger of extinction"
                                .
"We want to transmit real and truthful information,"
                                LΓ³pez Fernandez said.
"We're not going to hide that the orcas can touch the boats and sometimes break something, but we also have to be aware that what we have in front of us is not a monster."

Orcas again sink Yacht near Strait of Gibraltar - Two people rescued
Two people were rescued after orcas hit the roughly 50-foot Alboran Cognac 14 miles off the coast of Morocco, the 26th orca encounter in the region this year.
The Rock of Gibraltar seen from a ferry in the Strait of Gibraltar last year.
                                  The boat-sinking orcas are back.
Around 9 a.m. Sunday near the Strait of Gibraltar, two people on board the roughly 50-foot Alboran Cognac reported blows to the vessel’s hull and saw damage to the rudder as water flowed into the ship, Spain’s maritime rescue agency said.
An unknown number of killer whales had struck again, after hundreds of such encounters in recent years.
Over the radio, responders told the two individuals to put on their life jackets, make sure their GPS locaters were turned on and prepare for emergency evacuation. In the meantime, Spanish and Moroccan rescue agencies began urgently working to save them, locating a nearby oil tanker and electing not to dispatch a helicopter.
After about an hour, that tanker rescued the pair 14 miles off Cape Spartel in northern Morocco, the Spanish Maritime Safety and Rescue Agency (SASEMAR) said in a news release. The boat was left adrift and soon sank.

There is now some clear advice on how to avoid meeting orcas.
                                      20-meter rule
                                      (about the same in yards)
Orcas don't stay in waters less than 30 meters deep (leastwise not the Iberian Orcas).
The map shows the area where the orcas hunt for tuna and where the boat attacks happened.
                                      Continue quickly
"Stay away from the marked zone! If you stay close to the coast, you won’t have any problems. But if you drive right through it, you will. If you do get in, drive out as quickly as possible, accelerate and leave the two-kilometer zone. This prevents contact with the orcas 90% of the time."
                                      (Dr. Renaud de Stephanis)

is another video of an orca attack.
Nothing new, but the calf is cute. β™₯
And the broken rudder floating away was kind of funny. ☺

At least 6 dead, 7 missing as fishing vessel carrying 27 sinks off Falkland Islands.
At least six people are dead and seven missing after a fishing vessel carrying 27 onboard sank in the South Atlantic about 200 miles off the coast of the Falkland Islands.
The fishing vessel, FV Argos Georgia, requested assistance soon after it began sinking east of the islands at about 4 p.m. local time Monday, the Falkland Islands government said in press release Tuesday.
