What's behind their dance and how does their glow work?
On long, warm summer nights, you can watch the fireflies’ wedding dance.
2,000 different species of fireflies worldwide exist, three of them live in Germany. They can be observed on forest edges, in bushes and in gardens. The voracious larvae feed on snails. Adult fireflies cannot feed and live off their reserves. Between June and August, you can witness the mating nights of fireflies. To attract their mates, the females emit a greenish light. Hence the name

, even though they are beetles.
Some fireflies flash in a specific rhythm, others emit a continuous light, and some perform a dance. The glow varies from species to species. Some females even mimic the glow of other species to attract and feed their males. After mating, the females lay 60-90 eggs on grass roots, stones or in the soil and die shortly thereafter. About a month later, the larvae hatch and take 2-3 years to develop. These nocturnal beetles require absolute darkness to detect the glow. Their larvae live on the ground in leaf litter and hibernate during the food-poor season. Fireflies live only a few weeks, with males living longer than females.

🪲 The skin on their abdomen is transparent so that light can pass through.
🪲 The glow also serves to deter predators. These poisonous beetles are inedible.
🪲 In two of the three species found here, only the males have wings.
🪲 The poisonous bite of the larvae also kills snails, which are many times larger.

Fireflies generate their own light using the phosphor luciferin. This so-called
"cold light"
is not produced by heat, but by a chemical reaction in which the luciferin is caused to glow by oxygen and another substance called luciferase. The name
"firefly"
is therefore also misleading in this respect. The process of self-luminescence is called bioluminescence. Some jellyfish, fish and fungi can also glow.
