They definitely have the right to demonstrate. And depending upon the circumstances, the authorities have the right to attempt to disperse them using non lethal force. I'm not sure if they were justified here though, because I have no idea what activities the crowd was participating in.

They definitely have the right to demonstrate. And depending upon the circumstances, the authorities have the right to attempt to disperse them using non lethal force. I'm not sure if they were justified here though, because I have no idea what activities the crowd was participating in.

A demonstration is effective because the government/those in power cannot simply suppress the demo. This is civil protest and the best form of democracy: being able to react quickly to developments as a mass. And that's what's combated by such techniques. So, democracy is combated!
This isn't a military mission to prevent deaths in war. That would be nice and great!
This is about dissatisfied people, entire mass gatherings, that are controlled with it!
