    https://www.thrillist.com/news/nation/northern-lights-forecast-december-2020-aurora-borealis
The Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) has issued G1, G2, and G3 geomagnetic storm watches for the nights of Wednesday, December 9, and Thursday, December 10. The brief period of a G3 storm alert on the night of December 9 could mean that the northern lights will be seen relatively far south in the continental United States. If it arrives as expected, some projections suggest it might even be seen as far south as Oregon, Nebraska, northern Missouri, and New Jersey, among many other places across the country.
This is possibly a once in a lifetime event, so don't miss it. The website below will let you know if it is currently active. Right now nothing yet.

Are you not on occasion able to see the Aurora Australis where you are, NZer? I would think that you have very dark skies, but I suppose it wouldn’t matter much if you resided in a big city.
On edit: Had a look at the lights of the world map. For a small country, it appears that New Zealand is pretty well lit up. The interiors of Australia and Africa look as if they would be an astronomers dream come true. Also didn’t realize that New Zealand is considerably farther from Australia than I had thought (4,163 kilometers, or air travel distance of 2,587 miles).
If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you.

I live too far North to see the lights, but you're right about seeing them in some parts of the South Island.
In fact there are many dark places in NZ but I'm not close to any of them. Wish I was.

Thanks for the tip. It sounds like the world may be ending. I guess that would make sense because after all, it is 2020, isn't it?

                            No aurora after all.
Unfortunately, the forecast for the Aurora has been updated and conditions no longer look favorable for viewing tonight.
